You will find ideas about what to seee/do and where to eat etc in the VT Manchester pages and tips (written by members, both locals and visitors) here:
http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/Greater_Manchester/Manchester-308843/TravelGuide-Manchester.html
The official tourist information website has lots of information too, including 'what's on':
http://www.visitmanchester.com/travel.aspx
Manchester does not have an underground system, but does have a rather nifty Metrolink tram system. You can get daily tickets for off-peak travel on the Metrolink. Routes, times and fare info here:
http://www.metrolink.co.uk/
And buses, of course (including 3 free bus routes operating around the city centre from 7-7). Timetables, routes, fares etc here:
http://www.gmpte.com/
You can get a travelcard for the buses, and some types also cover Metrolink, but whether this is worthwhile really depends on what you want to do. Information about System One travelcards here:

The trams resume running on November 2nd or thereabouts. Northern Rail have some very good Rover tickets for their trains from Manchester - unlimited travel to many destinations for one fixed price ticket - have a look at -http://www.northernrail.org/offers

the city itself is excellent for shopping - i personally am not keen on the Trafford Centre.
In the city you have a Harvey Nics, Selfridges, lots of independent shops, Urbis centre is interesting with a nice bar on top - as is the cloud 23 bar in the Hilton hotel.
There are normally events of some sort occurring in the city so look at the manchester website i think somebody has suggested.
There is also the Palace theatre and Opera house where there is normally something going on.

Travel Tips for Manchester
Manchester Tip

seeing Take That live at the G-Mex. It was one of the best nights of my life! This was the first time I'd ever seen Take That live and it was around the time of their new image (Robbie's head shaven, Howard's dreadlocks etc) which all the papers reported as being 'very unsuitable' but I liked it!
The Good Old English Pub
by Lochlann
Manchester offers a lot of opportunities to drink, and there are loads of trendy noisy bars...
But if you prefer the traditional pub, there are still some. They are as good for the atmosphere as from an architectural point of view. They are the soul of English social life!
Some of them still have their all-tiled facade, like the PEVERIL OF THE PEAK on Bridgewater Street, and keep the old seperate rooms and corners and wooden panels inside, like the PEVERIL, or the APE AND APPLE on John Dalton Street that seems to be visited by locals.
Imposing buildings have not yet managed to crush THOMAS 'S SHOP HOUSE on Cross Street, and it extends its long narrow room to St Ann's Square along the little Alley Street.
From Market Street down along Fountain Street, you'll find the SHAKESPEARE. The medieval look is not genuine, but it gives an alternative to the monopole of the coffee bars...
A little further from the centre, try the LASS-O-GOWRIE, and visit the back room where hang some photos of older Manchester. It's in Charles Street, between the BBC and Princess Street.
The pity is we sometimes see old pubs like that destroyed and replaced by new modern developments. I say keep their business up so they don't have to close down!
Manchester City football ground
by kph100
Visited manchester citys ground to watch Arsenal away at 5.15pm on 26 August 2006.
A frustrating day with arsenal hitting the woodwork twice, nowhere near there best and losing to a penalty.
To get to the ground we walked from the city centre, route as follows -
Piccadilly, London Road, Store st, Ancoat street, Pollard St, Merril St, Ashton new Road. (away fans entrance on this main road). Took about 20 mins walk, and definately more comfortable
option when leaving than being crammed in over crowded illegal buses.
saw one bus with its fron rubbing the ground !
Along the walking route is clear signs pointing the way.
MCFC were still selling tickets for this game and it was not a sell out.
The stadium was originally built for the Commonwealth games in manchester, and is also used for other major events such as concerts.
Marie Louise Gardens Didsbury
by janiebaxter
Marie Louise Gardens is named after Marie Louise Silkenstadt who died young in 1904. After her death, her mother gave part of her gardens to the city in memory of her daughter.
This small garden, with horse chestnuts and other bushes and trees, is a very pleasant place to stop after work on a fine day, or at weekend, and enjoy the greenery, just off the main road.
The gardens are maintained by Manchester City Council who, unfortunately, are considering selling a part for property development!
On Palatine Road, between Didsbury and Northenden.
Deansgate
by alfredop about Several
You'll need a fat wallet or credit card with a high limit in pedestrianised King Street off Deansgate, where you'll find upmarket and designer stores selling top togs from Armani to Westwood, Timberland to Pink, Monsoon to Hugo Boss. It's also home to the only Top Shop Shoes and Virgin Brides shops in the UK.
Along Deansgate, you'll also find haute couture, a children's toy and fashion experience in Daisy & Tom and the old school glamour of Kendals department store and the Barton Street Arcade. Just off Deansgate is St. Ann's Square, another pedestrianised area and home to Habitat, Office, Disney, Past Times, Gap, Penhaligon's and a host of others.
Walk along Deansgate... either during the day or at night... you'll see the immediate change. While during the day it is a major avenue with restaurants and shops, at night it turns out to be a clubbing loonie house!
