Concerts & Events

Manchester is blessed with some great theatres, 'The Manchester Opera House', 'The Royal Exchange Theatre' and 'The Palace Theatre' being three of the best.
For classical music lovers, 'The Bridgewater Hall' is home to Manchester's famous Halle Orchestra. It is state-of-the-art concert venue, completed in 1996. Follow http://www.bridgewater-hall.co.uk for more details.
For pop music lovers the G-MEX centre or the Manchester Evening News Arena are on the schedule for most major UK tours. Both venues host a full program of exhibitions too. Follow http://www.g-mex.co.uk and http://www.men-arena.com
Manchester

If you plan on a shopping spree, take a couple of big shopping bags with you, they will be easier than carrying lots of small ones It can get a bit cold if walking round outside, but it can also get very hot inside, so make sure you have a layer you can take off or put on. It does, also, have a tendency to rain so I would advice a small raincoat than you can just stick in your bag or an umbrella. There are lots of photo opportunities in manchester, whatever your interest. Whether it is pictures of the Manchester Ship Canal, The Hacienda Appartments, China Town or just the hustle and bustle of Market Street, dont forget a camera!
Enjoy a relaxing chorus concert at the Cathedral
by alfredop
Just walking by I heard the sounds of a choir around Manchester Cathedral, and got hooked by them. Went by and stayed there for around an hour just listening to this essay as the real concert was taking place that night.
Blue John Cavern
by hayward68
Located in the Peak District near Castleton, this cavern is a working mine where the rare gemstone Blue John is found. This area is the only place in the world where you will find this mineral. The tour takes you deep underground until you find yourself in a large chamber where the Victorians used to hold dinner parties if you can believe it. Our tour guide was one of the miners and he was quite an amusing fella, shining his torch light on rock formations and telling us what they've named them. One in particular, named Bart Simpson, was a very good likeness.
This cavern is located on the A625 and tours are available year round costing approximately £5.
There's a giftshop where you can buy jewellery and other items made with Blue John stones. I bought a lovely silver brooch done in Celtic knotwork with a Blue John stone at the centre.
Arndale Centre
by Ben-UK
Th Arndale Centre in Manchester was built in the 1970's and was covered in yellow tiles that were universally disliked by Mancunians -- however, it was the city's first major shopping mall and provided lots of new shops for the city centre -- when completed in 1979 it was the largest covered shopping centre in Europe.
The dreaded yellow tiles have given way to more of a glass structure in recent years and the whole thing looks much better now. The centre comprises 2 floors of extensive shopping plus a multi-story car park.
My photo shows the entrance on Corporation Street.
