Went to this hotel for a convention in October, and wish I'd just walked right back out and across the street to the Brittania. Run-down inside, peeling wallpaper, only 2 of 3 lifts working - and those you waited on for 10 minutes - which would jerk and shake so badly you thought you would drop & die. My room had double-paned glass windows, but some others didn't, and there was no heat. Room cleaning was a joke - pulled the mother of all hairplugs from the tub after room was supposedly cleaned, and ring still in tub. Sebastian Coe located in basement: facilities also run-down, mildew everywhere, broken tiles, pool unheated and hadn't been properly cleaned in some time (hard ring around the inside of...chlorine? lime?), also floors in changing rooms scary.
Staff unwaveringly rude: short, hateful, not at all helpful with concerns/complaints.
Entire building needs demolished & rebuilt in my opinion. New staff would help too.
A Lot Better Than Expected

Reading all the negative reports about this hotel, I was prepared for the worse! I did not find any vagrants or prostitutes in the foyer. But there was a nasty chemical smell as reported by many guests.
The hotel is very shabby and has a very dated appearance. It was built in the 1960’s and the last refurb was back in the early 1990’s. The hotel is changing ownership at the moment and the staff hope that the new owners will restore the hotel to its former glory. But the investment to do this would be astronomical!
The hotel is not very secure, as entry is assessable from street level and cannot be monitored, as the reception is located on the second floor.
Reception was efficient and check in was very smooth. The roof car park is also on the second floor. The lifts are very old fashioned and not very efficient.
My room was on the sixth floor; the corridor was very shabby, but clean.
The room was surpassingly good. The furniture was very old, but in good condition. The room was large and clean. It was equipped with modern TV, trouser press, hair dryer, telephone, tea and coffee facilities. The room over looked the Piccadilly Gardens and was very quiet. The bathroom was also large and clean. Fully equipped with bath, shower and bidet! There was always plenty of piping hot water at a very high pressure.
The restaurant is on the third floor and it looked like it had recently been refurbished. I was only on B&B, so the only meal I sampled was the breakfast.
The breakfast was very good, with plenty of choice and very attentive staff.
On the whole I was impressed with this city centre hotel. Yes it does have problems and does need a fortune spending on it. But for value for money the two night deal was excellent.
not as bad as I thought

My wife and I have just returned from a 2 night stay at the Piccadilly which we had booked before discovering this site and all the awful reviews on this hotel. We were so worried we nearly cancelled but I am glad we didn't.We arrived 2 hours before the check in time but were allowed to check in as our room was ready. The staff on check in were efficient and polite. I don't know what all the fuss is about the lifts. They do move very fast but so what! The room was large and clean and very warm[it was freezing outside]. The bathroom was also large and clean. It did have some mould in the grouting in the tiles but no more than we have seen in other hotels and yes the floor and ceiling were due for renewal.
Overall the hotel could do with a refurbishment but we found the staff helpfull and polite. The breakfast was as good as most and we had no trouble attracting the staff for tea/coffee etc.Considering we were paying less than many B&B prices it was excellent value for money but if you are expecting 5 star luxury then you will be disappointed. The only surprise was having to pay £7.50 per night for the parking which other reviewers said was free.
You get what you pay for!

To be honest, after reading the reviews on this site I would have cancelled our booking had we not have paid for it already! Originally booked into a travelodge, we felt that an extra tenner for inlcusive breakfast, a pool and the central location was worth it - and I have to say it was! Ok, the rooms are very tired, our bathroom was scruffy but clean and everything worked fine. The pool was great - avoid the changing rooms if possible, they do have a slightly unique quality which would be best left unexplored!!! Breakfast was certainly not worth the money quoted at reception but as a B&B deal it was no worse that other chain hotels. This is NOT a 4* hotel - the location is fantastic and if you go with the expectation of you get what you pay for then you will not be disapointed.
friendly staff, great breakfast

My husband and i booked this hotel as it was one of the few with car parking. We only stayed for one night as we where going out for the day and then on to a concert. Check in was very good as we where about 3/4 hour early, but there was no problem. The rooms where very small and tired, but they where clean and tidy. The bathroom was also clean. The noise from the street at night was very noisy and we where on the 7th floor, it went on well past 2a.m. The breakfast was very good plenty of it and hot, it was self service so you just pleased yourself what you had. All in all the hotel was adaquate for somewhere just to put your head after a night out. If i wanted somewhere for a special occasion etc. I would look elsewhere. The staff though where very nice and friendly.

Manchester Airport to City - taxi fares - traveller on crutches :-(
by Mardai24
Normally we travel on public transport, but this time around I'm on crutches and in a cast. Can someone advise how much a taxi from the Manchester Airport to city centre is, roughly? Is it better to book ahead or just pick one up outside?
All/Any advise gratefully appreciated.

There will be plenty of taxis available outside arrivals at all the terminals and whilst I've no up-to-date info on what it would cost I'd reckon on about £35 (ish) depending on where you want to go in the city.
However it will be just as much of a walk to get to the taxi rank as it will be to get to the airport train station (which is pretty much in the middle and has conveyors and escalators connecting it to the various terminals) and so, crutches and cast or not, you might as well just get the train into Piccadily and get a cab from there.

Pre-booked minicabs are often a bit cheaper than taxis. This company, for example, quotes £23 for airport > city centre:

Might be worth investigating.
Also possibly worth investigating is the airport's provision for assistance. If it's a long way to get to public transport/taxis it might be worth getting something sorted (and possibly at your other airport too?). Info here:

I think a pre booked Mini cab would be better, yes. We book them to go to the airport from Salford and it's about 18 to 20 pounds with a tip. If you have a cast on, maybe you could arrange for help at the airport, a wheelchair that will get you to the cab rank easier. Yes you could take the train but with crutches it'll be difficult to worry about your luggage along with everything else.
