Travel Tips for Stockport

Don't look, don't wave, just keep moving

by JamalMorelli

This is not New Orleans, boo. And you surely ain't in Morocco. So, for your sake (if you are warm blooded and gregarious) consider not saying 'hi' to people if they aren't saying 'hi' to you - unless you get off on being anxiously ignored and causing nervousness (like I do) You will notice a strange attempt of most of them to avoid eye contact as well.

They are warm, loving and intelligent once you get to know the Stockporters, the Stockportians, the Stockportly, the Stockportugese, etc., but man, you gonna be 'OUT IN DA COLD' if you don't know them.

So leave 'em alone.

If you insist on contact - there is a further tip for breaking the ice below.

Pitch and Putt @ Bruntwood Park

by Alison_B

This pitch and putt course is 18 holes and is a bit of fun. It is based in a public park which makes it very informal and also very good value. It is very well kept for a public course.

It is based on the edge of town in Cheadle just opposite the big Sainsbury's and John Lewis, but it is a good afternoon's fun, I would highly recommend giving it a go, they provide clubs so you can just turn up. None needed, all provided.

St Mary's Church

by Myfanwe

St Mary's Church in Stockport is a Grade I listed building. The chancel dates from 1334. The nave and 125 foot tower were rebuilt in 1814 after the original one was cracked by bellringing celebration of Nelson’s victory at the battle of Trafalgar!

Chadkirk Chapel

by Myfanwe

Chadkirk chapel is a beautifully restored 14th Century Chapel set in the heart of the Chadkirk Country Estate and Local Nature Reserve. From the car park there is an easy going five minute walk to the Chapel which is surrounded by some lovely gardens and glorious woodland. After we had a look at the Chapel we followed the path around the chapel in an anti-clockwise direction. En route we passed St Chad's Well and the remnants of a watermill. The path then follows the course of the stream back to the car park where you'll find a picnic area if you fancy a spot of al fresco dining.

You may need this - Internet

by JamalMorelli

I mean, you are in Stockport and you can't find anywhere to go online. Go here - this lovely library offers free internet... just bring id.

The nicest library staff anywhere and very relaxed... you have a free hour with an extra fifteen minutes. Try to get there when school's in - it's crowded with kids otherwise.

I have internet at my house now but I still drop in to get books and check up on the staff...
