Parish Church
by sandysmith
The parish church is the oldest building in Wigan, dating from 13th century, and is gothic in style. Like other gothic churches it had grotesque gargoyle gutter spouts - but angels were above these too. Its open to the public for visiting but was closed when we passes (closes at 2.30pm). IIt was covered in scaffolding too so took a detailed shot instead of an overview.
Wigan Warriors
by sandysmith
Wigan is renowned for its Rugby League club - Wigan Warriors. They have recently moved grounds - with its former home of Central Park now a big chain supermarket. Not wanting to forget its history though a memorial cast bronze rugby ball can be seen in one corner of its car park. Engraved on it are famous players of the club - Tommy Bradshaw, Joe Egan and Jimmy Sullivan.
What to wear
by marcthewriter
During summer, a light weight jacket and perhaps an umbrella, and a pair of comfortable shoes, in winter bring a good quality jacket with a hood as it can get very wet and very cold! If you want to go camping there are many areas in and around the town that offer camp space for a small fee, and some farmers will even allow you to camp for free in fallow fields, but always ask first. The weather in Wigan ranges from cold and wet to stuffy and humid in summer months, and like many other places in the north of England it is quite unpredictable as just what you are going to find from day to day! In Wigan itself (rather than one of its satalite towns) when it gets windy, it gets really windy as the town lies at the bottom of a valley and the wind seems to rip its way through at times. Likewise in the summer it can get very stuffy due to the location of the town and this is when you are most likely to find all the public parks filled to the max.
The Road to Wigan Pier

"My second home"
Ah, Wigan. Not top of the tourist's list, but it's were my family come from. Or the better half anyway....
I've never lived here, but I spend many many days over here visiting family and watching rugby games. Some things are in the blood no matter where you're born.
I've got a couple of favourite places. They might not mean much to you, but they mean a lot to me.
