Burley YHA: Budget themed holiday venue
by LouiseTopp
Burley YHA is just outside of the village of Burley along a track that can get very muddy. The hostel is near the golf centre and green, to get to the hostel you must go past the Queens Head and up a steep hill towards the right.
I cycled from Salisbury to Burley, which took me four hours of serious cycling passing through North and South Gorley, Ibsley (described in another report) and down to Crow.
After your wheel-spin on the track, there’s a cattle grid at the gateway of the hostel, there’s also some Indian T-P’s there so it can sometimes feel like entering a Cheyenne reservation in the Old Wild West. There are supposed to be six beds inside and a fire in the middle, I don’t know what Sitting Bull would of made of that!
There is a cycle shed at the hostel which doesn’t have a light. In the corner is a pile of chopped logs. On entering the hostel you enter a hall which has a staircase and the lounge on your right, reception is ahead of you. On checking in (5pm) It is £14 to stay a night, I was put in room 3, but I think there are five or six rooms all same sex only. Room three has five bunk beds and a duvet is supplied with sleeping sheet, but you have to supply your own towels etc; they can be hired for 50p in the shop.
After settling in I decided to go down the track to a pub called the White Buck. You can hire a meal at the hostel before 6pm (but I was a bit late). It’s advisable to take a torch for your return, as the track has no lights. Order your food before 9pm which is when they stop cooking, one of the bar staff was a bit like Basil Fawlty which was a bit off-putting.
I decided to explore the YHA and found a member’s kitchen, large dining room, drying room and bathroom that is unisex with showers. The beds are comfortable with a sink in the corner. Breakfast, which is £3.80, must be ordered the night before; it is usually full English and starts at 8.30am.
I enjoyed my stay and met so many interesting people, and yes there is a TV!
There is a tv in the lounge and board games.
