Animals wander freely.
All over the New Forest you'll see the free-ranging ponies. But there are also several small herds of donkeys to look out for - I came across this very young baby just outside Lyndhurst.
Cute and friendly as they are, visitors are asked not to feed the animals, because they can be aggressive - they are wild animals after all - and because if they're attracted by food to the roads they are in danger from traffic. Sadly, many are killed every year by cars.
Lyndhurst has cattle grids and gates to keep the animals out of the village centre, but they wander freely all around the rest of the area.
