by KelseyQ about Chewton Glen

This is a place that is hard pressed to find a rival.
The service, food and accomodations always exceeds my expectations.
The spa has been revamped recently and is fantastic.
I would highly recommend it. Situated near the New Forest and also a 2 minute bike ride to a lovely coastal clifftop this luxurious get away is a an old favourite.

Great place but very expensive!

We were bought a night at Chewton Glen as a Valentines gift. We have been here before for meals and always had a lovely time.

On arrival there was some confusion about our booking and we were told that unless we could present a voucher then we would have to pay again - very disappointing when no voucher had been issued! This was quickly sorted out however and we were shown to our room.

Originally we had been allocated a Bronze room with a shower but we upgraded to a silver room with a bath. The room was lovely and big, spotlessly clean and comfortable. There was champagne on ice and a small box of homemade chocolates as well as a welcome note from the management. The bathroom was also huge and very luxurious with Molton Brown toiletries.

As we only had one day at Chewton Glen we headed straight for the pool and spa. The changing rooms are gorgeous with plenty of towels, robes and slippers. The steam rooms and saunas are in male and female changing rooms so it is not possible to enjoy these with a partner so I can't comment on them but they looked nice.

The pool area is very nicely done, the pool is fairly small and smelt a bit musty when I was in it. The spa area was the highlight of our visit. There is a beautiful warm pool area with various bubble jets to pamper every bit of you! It was very easy to spend time relaxing in there!

The food in the evening was great. It was a set menu for valentines day with a couple of choices for each course. The chef happily made an alternaitve to the mushroom soup starter and the whole meal was faultless. The service was attentive but not over the top, the standard of cooking was excellent, the wine list was extensive and served perfectly and the atmosphere in the restaurant was great.

We had a great nights sleep despite the builders being up and banging at 9am (they are currently refurbishing the lounges) Breakfast is served in the conservatory and is a plentiful selection of cold meats, cheeses, pastries, yoghurts and fruits or you can order a cooked breakfast at extra cost (breakfast was included in our package) A nice touch was a small glass of freshly made smoothie as well as a choice of juices.

To summarise, Chewton Glen is gorgeous and totally fantastic for a romantic break if you can afford it!

A disappointment!

We were so looking forward to staying at Chewton Glen. We had read so many good reviews and noted the excellent comments on the Tripadvisor website that we thought it would be the ideal place to celebrate a birthday!

The hotel itself has excellent grounds, a fantastic spa and the majority of the staff are amazingly friendly, professional and efficient.

However .................... our room was a huge disappointment! (Room 50). To put it politely, it was rather shabby and tired i.e.

Shower in bath did not work - we were told this was a problem that could not be resolved during our stay as the lever on the control was missing. Nobody alerted us to this problem on our arrival.

Main shower - thermostat failed during our stay leaving us with boiling water, which was very dangerous This was however fixed during our stay

Furniture and soft furnishings - generally very dated and shabby with coffee table with trim missing, chair with stuffing falling out of arm and 1960's wardrobe doors which had seen better days!

When we discussed the shower problems with the assistant manager we received a rather dismissive and non-apologetic response!!! Not very 5 star!!

Bearing in mind this room cost nearly £500 per night we were expecting the very best, which this clearly wasn't.

The morale of the story is - make sure you check that you get a refurbished room rather than a one awaiting refurbishment. If you have any problems during your stay, go straight to the top as I am sure that the MD wouldn't be as dismissive as his assistants were when dealing with day-to-day problems!

Luxurious and exclusive.... if you can afford it

We stayed at Chewton Glen for 2 nights (weekend) in March 2007, for a wedding.

First thing to say is that this is a VERY expensive place. Standard room cost, for a basic room, was around £320 per night, and even the "wedding rate" (applied for one night of our stay) was £200, without breakfast ! So, if you're the sort of person who can't put that out of your mind, you'll struggle to see the value. It is really a place for those who don't mind paying for luxury and exclusivity.

That said, we were very happy with our stay. The Hotel itself is superb. The rooms (of which there are only 58) are extremely nice, well decorated and clean. You pay for the overall ambience of the place and the unobtrusive service (its been voted the world's best country house hotel) .

The hotel is an old house (though not what I'd call a stately home) in superb grounds. To give you an idea - it has its own croquet lawn...It also has attached to it a really nice spa/hydrotherapy place/gym, which is really good (again, a bit pricey), and tennis courts in a very well done facility a short walk through the grounds.

The food is also very good. Breakfast is a combination of continental buffet and cooked breakfast (cooked to order and brought to your table). Dinner was also excellent. We had lunch a couple of times in the spa restaurant, and they do a good buffet - though that itself is a place where ladies who lunch seem to , well, lunch.

It's the kind of place you might go to as an extra special treat (if your an ordinary kind of person), but you can feel out of place amongst all the Bentleys and Porsches. As a romantic getaway though, it is great.

Enjoy!

Superb

We stayed here in March 2006 for a well earned break and although we were only there 3 nights it felt like 3 weeks. The service was faultless, the food excellent and the spa worth visiting. We loved the fact that in 3 days we felt we didn't want to leave the hotel and its beautiful grounds except to don the hotel 'hunter wellies' and go down to the sea shore.... Having stayed in a few 'luxuirous' hotels I can honestly say this was the best. Expensive it may be, but worth every penny!

loved it

I attended the hotel for one night as part of a business conference for the company I work for. We would able to bring our partners and they could use the spa whilst we were attending the conference itself.

The room was amazing as were the spa facilities. Because of the size of our party we had a private dining room and the service was faultless.

I would thoroughly recommend it and will return with my partner for a proper getaway to use all of the facilities!
