Travel Tips for Portsmouth

HMS Victory

by SeaBreezeUSA

I love the Naval History and old sailing ships of the 1700's - 1800's!! It is amazing what these men went through every day to defend their country. Many men were taken by 'press gangs' in the middel of the night, and found themselves as crew of these ships, fighting for their lives!!! We can not imagine the hardships these men faced every day, from the food or lack of, to the battles, to the years away from home.

Trafalgar Day

by LouiseTopp

A ceremony is usually held on board HMS Victory at Portsmouth Naval Base to remember the 199th anniversary of Admiral Lord Nelson's triumph at the Battle of Trafalgar.

During the service a laurel wreath is laid on the spot, where Admiral Nelson fell when he was shot in the battle.

Go to the Isle of Wight.
Take the ferry from Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight. This was the favourite seaside resort of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, they stayed in Osborne House. The house is still furnished as they had it and it gives a very good view of royal life. The house is dotted with family treasures such as the sculptured arms of the royal children and many photos. The Swiss cottage was built for the children to play in and is now a museum attached to Osborne House. You can also see the bathing machine, which was used by the Queen.

1] mananited chicken sandwich
2] chargrilled steak sandwich

they tasted good with free drinks. the restaurant is facing the harbour, really nice surrounding and it must be nice in the sunny summer. the price was resonable (5.99 for lunch meal) mananited chicken is good. my friend's steak sandwich is not bad.

Visit the Portsmouth historic Ships, the city’s dockyard.
It was once a vital naval port and although it is quieter these days, but it is a fascinating city because of the long naval history. Now known as the Portsmouth historic Ships, the city’s dockyard is the centre of the most important sights. One of the most important of these has to be the hull of the “Mary Rose”; this was Henry VIII’s flagship. It capsized on its maiden voyage as it was leaving to fight the French in 1545. In 1982 it was recovered from the bottom of the sea. With it thousands of 16th century objects were recovered and they are now on display. They give a fascinating picture of life at sea 450 years ago. Near the “Mary Rose” is HMS Victory; this is the flagship on which Admiral Nelson was killed during the Battle of Trafalgar. It has been restored to its former glory and there are tours around the ship regularly throughout the day. There is also the Royal Naval Museum, which shows naval history from the 16th century, and the 19th century HMS Warrior.
