Travel Tips for Portsmouth

Famous Ships

by Geoff_Wright

Portsmouth is the'home of the Royal Navy', and as such is also home to many famous British ships, the most famous of which must be HMS Victory* Another famous ship that I saw here, but sadly will not return, is the former HMY Britannia.* Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia (more commonly called the Royal Yacht Britannia) was built by the Clyde (Glasgow) shipbuilders Messrs John Brown and co., and was launched by HM Queen Elizabeth II on 16th April 1953. I was fortunate enough to see her alongside the Dockyard on one of my sailing courses in Portsmouth Harbour. Britannia was decommissioned on 11th December 1997, and moved to her final destination of Leith, in Edinburgh, where she is now used by a private commercial company.

A word of warning, if you watch a game from the away end make sure you take a coat in case it rains as there is no roof. To watch the match the only equipment you really need is a good strong voice to sing your club`s songs and encourage the team and your eyes to actually watch the game, some people do take a pair of binoculars if they sit far from the pitch.
Apart from the above the club s encourage you to buy their merchandise to enhance your matchday experience, you can buy virtually anything from hats and scarfs to the full blown replica kit, which generally is updated annually.

Getting to the continental ferry port

by jayhawk2000

A shuttle bus service connects the ferry port with Portsmouth & Southsea Rail Station and The Hard Interchange. Bus 101 runs from June to September and is timed to meet sailings.

A single cost 1GBP in September 2001.

It will wait for passengers coming off the ferry: the staff greeting you at the terminal will radio ahead to hold the bus until you’ve passed through passport control.

The ferry port is designed for people taking their cars to and from the Continent, so this passenger-only service does not often become busy.

traditional English steak?

by jil_coleslaw about Shorties

This restaurant is not really big and quite crowded but the environment is friendly with traditional decoration.

it serves:
chargrilled steak and chicken
american burgers
vegetarian choices
pork ribs
seafood
children's menu

opening time:
every evening including bank holiday 1800 till late I had a medium steak in cream sauce with chips, tomato, peas and mushrooms

my friends had a deep fried prawn with coleslaw. but we found it was quite oily

but all the food is delicious and in a large portion.

Portsmouth Harbour and its naval ships

by jono84

The wonderful feature that Portsmouth has, and yet I readily admit i take for granted as do many others, is its naval ships.

New ships regularly dock or simply shelter just out of portsmouth waters, and every morning there is often a new vessel just docking to pick up fuel, or getting ready to leave to resume its voyage.

Sometimes there are the loved ones of marines perched waiting on the sides of the Dockyard, welcoming their brothers, fathers, husbands, etc. into port after a long time at sea.

Also, for the past few years we have had american navy aircraft carriers stopping just outside the dockyard to shelter, and to offer their marines the last available opportunity to step on dry land, before the long haul back across the Atlantic. This offers a great chance to see the enormity of such amazing vessels.

I guess i should feel priveleged that I get to see such enormous naval ships on a regular basis.
