A great area to stay in Portsmouth is Old Portsmouth. This is the historic part of the city. There are a couple of good B&Bs around. Try the Sally Port Inn (023) 9282 1860 which is a pub too (but generally a quiet one). There is also Fortitude Cottage and Sailmakers Loft in the same area. I dont know too much about them though, but the locations are great!

http://www.visitportsmouth.co.uk/somewhereToStay.asp lists hotels etc in the area.

I wouldnt stay in the Craneswater Area (too dull, though close to the beach), and stay away from the Osbourne Road/Southsea are as it is full of
late night revellers!

The link below shows you where Old Portsmouth is

Travel Tips for Portsmouth

HMS Victory, the flagship of...

by B_Caro

HMS Victory, the flagship of Lord Nelson and also the place where he was killed during the Battle of Trafalgar.

You have to join a guided tour to get on the ship and see the inside (and to see the place where Lord Nelson was shot and the place where he finaly died).

It wasn't allowed to take photos on the ship. Take a look at the travelogue for more shots.

Portsmouth being home to the Royal Navy makes it one of the best place to see. The sea tradition and culture of the british has always been to the sea and there are several muzieum which show case this.

Visit Carisbrooke castle on...

by margaretvn

Visit Carisbrooke castle on the Isle of Wight. It was built in the 11th century and it was here that Charles the First was kept prisoner in 1647. There was an escape attempt but it failed because he got stuck in the window bars. A walk along the walls gives marvellous views of the countryside.

Asian food buffet

by jil_coleslaw about Water margin

The food here is fine with various choices. For me, the one from Hong Kong, the food is not so authentic for Asian people, but they are suitable for western people.

The restaurant is quite spacious but many tables and chairs as well. Thus, space between each table is not so comfortable. Drinks can be purchased at the bar near the entrance.

Lunch Buffet:
Mon - Fri 1200-1500 (6.9 pounds)
Sat, Sun and Bank Holiday 1200-1600 (8.5 pounds)

Dinner Buffet:
Mon - Fri 1800-2330
Sat and School Holiday 1700-2330
Sun and Bank Holiday 1700-2230
12.8 pounds (Sun - Thurs)
13.8 pounds (Fri and Sat) Aromatic Duck with rice pastry
Chicken Wings with Salt & Pepper
Vegatarian Spring Rolls
Assam Chicken
King Prawn
Squid
Steamed Salmon with Black Bean Sauce (very Cantonese style)
Beef with Spicy Satay Sauce

I was too full that I did not try the Japanese noodles and much desserts. But I think the noodle is worth to try.

Millenium Promenade

by annase

The Millenium Promenade is a walkway that stretches over 6km on both sides of Portsmouth Harbour: 3km both the Portsmouth and Gosport communities. You can follow the Promenade all the way from the Historic Dockyard around Gunwharf Quays and further south into the centre of the Old Portsmouth that has retained much of its 18th century port feel. The promenade finishes at Spur Redoubt near Clarence Pier, Southsea.

The promenade has been built of natural stone and it was opened in 2001. Once it was opened, it made the part of waterfront accessible to the public after some centuries. The route is marked by a chain motif set into the surface, symbolising partnership between Portsmouth and Gosport & between past and present. Historically it also refers to the chain, which used to be tightened across the harbour entrance at times of potential attack.

The promenade is lighted by column-mounted lanterns. They were designed to reflect the historic character of blue lights at night that are strung around the harbour.
