Looking for best way from hotel to ship dock

by afnash

Taking a cruise out of Southampton and looking for ideas on how to get from our hotel Holiday Inn Express - West in Southampton to the Cruise line dock. There are 14 of us. Asked the hotel while making reservation but they were no real help. Any suggestion?

Posted this earlier in the incorrect forum, so re-posting it here where I should of in the first place!

Firstly it depends which dock you are departing from - there are several. Your hotel is a couple of miles out of the city centre and to get to the docks would require 2 bus journeys (changing at the shopping centre) and even from there the only shuttle bus direct is to the QEII dock.

If there's 14 of you, with luggage, you'd be better off getting three or four taxis. Several of the Southampton taxi firms have 6-seaters and so the number of taxis you'll need will depend on how much luggage you have.

The hotel reception can sort that out for you once you've arrived.

Thanks for getting my replies all in one place!

I am not sure of the dock but the cruise line is Royal Cribbian. So are you saying maybe I don't need to schedule something in advance, I could take care of it the day I arrive?

Yes just ask your hotel reception to sort out taxis for you - they'll happily pre-book them for you.

It is around 65 miles from Heathrow to Southampton. A private transfer for 200GBP is not what I would call a rip-off (you would pay similar prices for private transfers for the same distance anywhere in Europe). Public transport for that journey is much cheaper, and perfectly feasible (train or long-distance bus, perhaps plus taxi).

To the original poster: there are 14 of you so you will probably need 4 taxis (unless, as john says, one of the local firms has large vehicles available). There should be no problem at all with the hotel sorting it out for you, but do arrange this when you check-in or soon after. That way the taxi firm can make the booking in advance and be sure that vehicles are available. Don't wait until you are ready to leave before arranging the taxis.

BTW a taxi from your hotel to the docks should cost about £12 per vehicle plus maybe a small extra charge if you have a lot of luggage and so if get 3 x 6-seaters it'll probably be cheaper than using public transport anyway.

"Where our TA cruise ends"

Southampton has three cruise terminals. Lines such as P&O Cruises use the Mayflower, which is about a five minutes's taxi ride from the Southampton Central railway station, which is close to the city center. The City Terminal is further south and hosts e.g. Royal Caribbean, whereas the Queen Elizabeth II terminal is at the southernmost tip of western docks and is used by e.g. Cunard Line.
All three are located in the Western Docks area.
