BUS FROM SOUTHAMPTON TO HEATHROW

by Arkad

I understand that there is a taxi ride from the cruise terminal at Southampton to the National Express bus station.

Please inform me the name of the bus station that I should ask the taxi driver to take us to. Also, how much does the taxi drive cost?

Are there are any other private bus companies operating from the cruise terminal or the bus station, and are tickets available when we arrive?

Thanks for the help.

Taxi will be around 6- 7 GBP, but the coach will go from the coach station on Harbour Parade (the taxi driver will know anyway, as soon as you ask for the coach to Heathrow). www.nationalexpress.com for coach times and fares.

There are private shuttle services (not bus companies), but they are much more expensive than the coach or train. If you google 'southampton heathrow transport' you will get a number of companies offering private shuttles.

Travel Tips for Southampton

The Docks

by alycat

This snap is of the entrance near the port. The southampton port is managed by the British Ports authority. The thing that keeps comin back to ur mind all the while after leaving Southampton is all the stories, memoribilia, thougths for the people who set sail on the ship on that fateful day on its maiden voyage. It jus keeps comin back.. Guess there's a lesson to be learnt!!!!

The Royal Pier, Southampton

by MarkJochim

Southampton's Royal Pier was originally designed by Dowell and built in timber by William Betts. It was opened by Princess Victoria (just prior to her becoming Queen) in 1833. In 1870, a railway station was built near the entrance of the pier; the railway extension served the pier until 1914. It enjoyed its heyday from the 1890's until the outbreak of the First World War . Royal Pier could berth ten steamers at any given time and a pavilion (built in 1894) provided a program of entertainment including dancing, concerts, exhibitions, and even roller-skating from 1906.

A larger pavilion was constructed in the late 1920's. In 1931, Flt. Lt. G.R. Stamforth set the world speed record, flying the Submarine SB6 over Southampton Water; his aircraft was housed adjacent to the pier until the 1960s as a tourist attraction. In 1963, the pavilion was converted to a ballroom but it and the pier closed at the end of 1979.

In 1986, the gatehouse of Royal Pier was converted to a pub and restaurant and a large conservatory was built at the rear of the building for use as a dining area. However, a fire in 1987 completely destroyed the pavilion and bandstand at the pier head. Another fire in 1992 destroyed much of the pier neck and seriously damaged the conservatory.

Today, the derelict wooden pier neck defiantly curves over the water and the ornate pier gatehouse stands alone and out-of-place amid the commerical containers and bustling traffic of the Royal Funnel Dock. Although vandalism has taken its toll, it is still possible to enjoy the Victorian elegance of this once grand gatehouse as it proudly stands fast on the dockside.

Gateway to the seas

I have not spent much time in this town, but I have been through it to go sailing and I have flown over many a time.
In particular I had one chance to be the pilot flying over it, which resulted in this picture.
