Lovely stay

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and will definitely stay again. It must have been a very grand house as many of the fittings, chimneypieces etc are still there. However it has seen better days and the ugly fire doors and dated public areas will not be to everyone’s taste.

My room, on the top floor, was quiet and had a new carpet and refitted bathroom. The wardrobe was about 50 years old and the décor more suitable for an old person’s flat, but the bed was very comfortable, and the cafetiere and bottled water were nice touches. The bar was comfortable, though Sky Sports on the big screen jarred a bit. The bar food was lovely and it was served very promptly by friendly staff.

The restaurant is huge and rather impersonal but my breakfast was good and I hardly had to wait at all.

The best thing about staying here is the pool/spa. It is far superior to most hotels I’ve stayed in. The mid-sized pool was warm and clean, the spa bath soothing and the steam and sauna rooms just right. The showers were superb and I loved the ceiling lights constantly changing colour. On both nights I was almost the only person there and when I asked was told it was usually that quiet.

The staff in both the spa and hotel were most friendly and helpful. With a bit of investment this hotel could be lovely, rather than workaday, but in the meantime if you get a good internet deal (mine was £55 per night B&B) you really can’t go wrong.
