Travel Tips for Winchester

A nice place

by Mr_Thirkell

Winchester is a Great place, I ended up staying here for two years when i was working in Hursley (a small village just outside Winchester) I Live in New Zealand and found this to be the "Quintessential English town" Its character was fantastic. The atmosphere relaxed and the people generally very friendly. I would definitely go to the Cathedral and have a walk around the grounds My Favourite memory of Winchester had to be walking down the main street and stopping off for dinner at Pizza express before heading home again at sunset in the summer.

Shopping Centre Museum - The Brooks Experience

by Jehcekah

You can find the most interesting things in unexpected places! Like this museum which is located in The Brooks Shopping Centre.

Winchester is a very old city. When they started to build this new shopping centre sometime in the 1990's, they unearthed a whole history underground. Spread over much of the Brooks site were the remains of houses, suggesting that this was a mainly residential area in the Roman period. In some parts of the site, medieval layers were found to be virtually undamaged by later activity.

There are two dioramas, which depict life in both the Roman times and in Medieval times. They are a bit cheesy, using animatronic figures with a narration which plays along with the story. While this isn't the most innovative museum I have ever visited, it certainly is a hidden treat which you should visit!

There is no entrance fee.

Jane Austen's Lodge in Winchester

by Jefie

As the main reason behind my trip to England was to visit all the places associated with Jane Austen's life in southern England, a day-trip to Winchester, where the beloved author died, was mandatory. Jane Austen's health began declining in 1816 and on May 24, 1817, she and her sister Cassandra moved out of the family home located in the small village of Chawton and took up residence at 8 College Street, in Winchester, so she could receive better medical care. Unfortunately, she did not get better, and passed away on July 18, 1817.

The house where she died still exists but it is a private home and cannot be visited. There's a small plaque above the front door that says that Jane Austen lived and died there.

Winchester City Centre - Must See

by aliante1981

The sights that were on my must see' list when I was setting off:

- Winchester Cathedral
- The Great Hall and King Arthur's Round Table
- Winchester College
- City Museum
- The Westgate
- The City Mill
- Winchester Military Museums
- The Hospital of St Cross
- Wolvesey Castle

Take a walk along the River Itchen

by Jefie

To get from the Guildhall to Wolvesey Castle, we took the path that goes along the River Itchen. Although it is just a short walk, it is quite scenic - we got to walk past the historic City Mill and we then walked along "The Weirs", a riverside promenade nestled between the river and the ancient city walls. The lush vegetation and the historic character of the place truly made this short stroll quite pleasant!
