Travel Tips for Winchester

Winchester College

by Tolik

Winchester College was founded in 1382. It is believed to be the oldest continuously running school in England.

You can see paintings, sculpture, stained glass, tapestries and misericords set in set in a beautiful building. Mon – Sat 10 – 1, 2- 5. Admission adult £2.50, senior £2

Izaak Walton

by leics

If you are into fishing you may well have heard of Izaac Walton.

In 1653 he wrote 'The Compleat Angler', which is by far his best known work (he wrote other things too, including biographies), weaving fishing information, quotations, folklore and folk songs into the story of three friends travelling through the English countryside.

Walton was born in Stafford in 1593 and died in 1683. He is buried in a quiet side-chapel in Winchester cathedral (a floorslab marks his grave); when I visited it was (appropriately) decorated with fishy works of art.

Jane Austen's Grave

by aliante1981

The famous author of 'Pride and Prejudice', 'Emma', 'Sense and Sensibility' and many other novels is buried in the cathedral, which has made it a popular destination with those tourists who are interested in British literature and the lives of authors themselves.

The Victorian Guildhall is on the Broadway (High Street changes its name to Broadway right here). Tourist Information Center on the ground floor offers free maps and booklets. They also have an Accommodation Service and Gift Shop.

The Guildhall Gallery is upstairs offering changing exhibitions of painting, photography, ceramics, craft, and sculpture. Gallery open 10 – 1, 2 –5 Admission free.

From the Guildhall steps you can see King Alfred the Great monument. King Alfred made the city his capital.

River Walk

by planxty

The walk along the river Itchen from the City Bridge right round past the wiers is very pleasant.

The Bridge itself is from 1813 but is believed to be on the site of one erected by St. Swithun in the 9th century.

A little way along on the right are the last surviving remains of the Roman wall that once surrounded the city, although to be honest, they are not very impressive.

Carrying on, you will pass by Wolvesey Castle, where Mary Tudor and Phillip II of Spain had their wedding feast. Unfortunately, this was closed for winter when last I visited.

The path will eventually take you to Winchester College (see seperate tip).

the whole thing is only about a fifteen minute gentle walk.
