by ontangent

You can check www.smoothhound.co.uk. They usually list some nice B&Bs and hotels. I like that they also show photos of the places. Enjoy Winchester!

Thanks
i think i'll give the Wykeham a try as it is not to far away and not quite as expensive as some of the hotels in the center.

Good luck! Winchester isn't all that big so probably wherever you stay will be perfect. It's a lovely place to walk around.. not to mention seeing Jane Austen's grave. :-)

Alfred the Great
by WulfstanTraveller
Near the centre of Winchester, there is a prominent statute of Alfred the Great, the great West Saxon king who beat back the Danes and set the stage for the "English Reconquest" that unified England in the 10th century.
The Great Hall
by SallyM
The Great Hall is all that remains (apart from some foundations of a tower, which can be seen outside) of Winchester Castle. Admission is free.
It's claim to fame is the 'Round Table' hanging on the wall. This table dates from the 14th century and was repainted during the reign of Henry VIII. It is not from the time of King Arthur (whenever that might have been - Arthur is more of a myth than an actual historical king).
The Great Hall also contains a large sculpture of Queen Victoria, made to celebrate her Golden Jubilee.
Outside is a recreation of a thirteenth-century garden, called Queen Eleanor's garden in honour of two thirteenth-century queens, Eleanor of Provence (wife of Henry III) and Eleanor of Castile (wife of Edward I).
St. Swithun's Shrine
by iwys
Saint Swithun was a 9th century Bishop of Winchester, now best known for his place in the popular British weather lore proverb that if it rains on Saint Swithun's Day, it will rain for 40 days and 40 nights.
St Swithun's day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remain
St Swithun's day if thou be fair
For forty days 'twill rain na mair
Swithun achieved sainthood for the miracle of repairing a basketful of broken eggs. He died in 862 and was originally buried out of doors, rather than in his cathedral, at his own request, so that the "sweet rain of heaven" could fall on his grave. In 971 it was decided to move his body to a new indoor shrine, and it is said that the ceremony was delayed by 40 days of torrential rain, which was taken to be a sign of Swithun's displeasure at the move. Saint Swithun's Day, July 15th, is the day on which his remains were moved.
The modern shrine stands over the place where he was buried. He is, however, a minus an arm, which was taken by a monk, as a holy relic, to Norway in 1125 and used to found the Cathedral of St Swithun Stavanger
Royal Hampshire Regiment Museum
by leffe3
It's a beautiful old house that houses the museum, which in itself, unless you are into military history, has limited appeal. Lots of glass cases and mannequins modeling uniforms.
The house is a Grade II listed building from around 1730 and the rose garden is a popular quiet spot.
Open Tuesday - Friday, 10am-4pm, weekends 12-4pm.
Free entry.
