Gloomy faded splendour of a day gone by
We were offered a night here when our Wichester Mecure booking was not available as promised. We were told it was equally a 4 * - It is most definitely not a 4* (offocial rating 3*). We didn't even bother looking at the room. The hotel is convenient, but the entrance was from an age gone by. Now, we can appreciate 'olde worlde' and a spot of old fahioned culture, but the carpets looked very worn and there was an all over 'grubby' feel to the place. The bar area seemed very small and we couldn't see the restaurant from our first explorations. Extremely old fashioned feel to the place, with a large out of date painting of the Queen in reception and as I say, a threadbare feel to the carpets. The lounge area, resembled a not so good old peoples home with a cross between 1950s and 1970s decor. I am sorry if this offends, but there it is. I would not wish that on retired people, or for a paid stay for any age at all. I read down and see it has nice rooms and a pleasant garden, but we wanted to feel like we had gone to a place that took us away from the nagging feeling of cleaning that one has at home! Also, I think any culture is better for a mix of all ages in whatever circumstances, that is just my opinion and this did not offer that feeling. As I say, we refused the room and looked elsewhere.
Unique Quality: The receptionist was very sweet and helpful.
Convenient for center of town, ermmm cheap? Nothing else that I can think of.
