bus station / tube station

by progmac

hello --

i'm staying with a friend in Harpenden for about a week in the middle of this month. I'm wondering if there is a public bus operating to London proper, because if so, I can buy the travelcard for tube zones one and two but all bus zones and thus save a load of money.

anyone know?

Not sure about a direct bus into London from Harpenden, but you can get a bus to Welwyn Garden City and the train from there into London takes half an hour.

you can catch a Thameslink train into London Thameslink (near to Kings Cross. Try to get a fast train which only takes about 30 minutes.

If you are going in for the day, you can get a one day travelcard which will cover the overground train into London, the tube and the buses.
Hope this helps!

Travel Tips for Harpenden

Town Hall & Tourist Information

by Willettsworld

Originally built in 1850 as a school, Park Hall was for many years allowed to deteriorate and consequently its use as a community use building was diminished. In 1988 there was a proposal to demolish it and to sell the land, but because of its historic importance to Harpenden this proposal was rejected and instead the District Council placed a Conservation Order on the building and in 1994 Harpenden Town Council secured a 99-year lease for it to be used as a community hall. The Town Hall, behind Park Hall, contains a very useful tourist information point where you can find town maps and information leaflets.

Well-to-do town with a village feel

by Willettsworld

Harpenden is a very well-to-do town of around 30,000 people, just north of St Alban's. It's a very pleasant town that still retains a "village" feel with its tree lined High Street, town greens, period cottages, and Common – 96.39 hectares of open space that supports cricket, football and Golf clubs. All of this adds up to make it one of the most expensive towns to live in outside of London with an average house price of £500,000!

"Little'old Harpenden"

All my life I have lived in Harpenden, and I would have it no other way. Harpenden can be described as a Garden Town and over the past two centuries it has grown from a farming community of little over a thousand to a residential town of over 30,000 people. Located 30 miles North of the capital city, London, Harpenden sits on the dip-slopes of the Chilterns and is surrounded by Hertfordshire countryside.
