If you are lucky enough to be in this location during Hitchin's rugby season, I would definitely stop in and catch a match. These were a bunch of fun guys to hang out with before and after the game, and they were definitely a good side.
I would highly recommend catching up!
A reason for visiting this town which is unknown to tourist is because my sister lives here and I know her neighbours and friends and have watched this little town grow up. Can't say that all the changes are positive but the population has increased as well as the housing.
Hitchin is a market town in North Hertfordshire, a region which has been settled for thousands of years evidence found date from the Bronze Age to the Roman Empire.
The name Hitchin dates back to AD600 named by a Saxon tribe, the Hicce.
Over the next 900 years Hitchin grew and its wealth came from the trade in wool and the St. Mary's church, a massive building which still stands today was built.
In th 19th and 20th centuries the Tuesday market drew people from the surrounding villages and when the railway was built in 1850 people came from further afield.
Trading in Cattle and livestock was in Bancroft, and later in Paynes Park, and general market goods were traded in the Market Place which still exists today in not in Market Square but near to the river Hiz by St. Mary's Square.
In the valley of the Hiz there is a villa at Great Wymondly and in the town of Hitchin itself Roman occupation material has been found. From Hitchin to Letchworth along the Roman road which ran parallel with the Icknield Way Roman occupation and burials have been recorded. only leaving their former homes in small groups.
Hitchin is sandwiched between
Letchworth and Stevenage
Nearby Towns are:
Baldock, Henlow, Shefford, Luton, Biggleswade, Harpenden, Welwyn, Dunstable, Sandy, Royston.
An interesting walk is the Pegsdon Hills Nature Reserve:
This is one of the most important prehistoric trackways in Britain, people have travelled along it from Dorset to Norfolk since they arrived in Britain after the last Ice Age nearly 10,000 years ago.
After a climb of a 100 meters you are rewarded with a wonderful view of the countryside around and below you can see the pub.
THE LIVE AND LET LIVE
where you can go for a refreshing pint of lager in its lovely flower garden.
Trains run regularly from Kings Cross, taking around 40 minutes, and there are up to four an hour at peak times.
Best days to visit are Tuesday,Thursday & Friday
Avoid visiting on Wednesday as there is no market and the museums are shut
Tuesday - traditional market selling fruit & veg, flowers
Wednesday - try to visit another day
Thursday - traditional market selling fruit & veg, flowers
Friday - antiques/crafts market
Located in the English Countryside north of London, Hitchin is a nice small town with very friendly people, and a very fun rugby team.
I would highly recommend this off the beaten path spot to visit during your next trip to Jolly Ole England.
