Travel Tips for St Albans

St. Albans city trail

by Mique

At the tourist office you can get the city trail. It will give you the best impression of St. Albans and includes all the highlights of this place like the clock tower, the abbey, the verulamium park, the roman theatre as well as the Marlborough almshouses and the St. Albans Museum.

Have (again) no idea what time the trail usually would cost you. It depends of course on the places you decide to visit, like the abbey and the Verulamium musuem. But since i didn't walk it all, i couldn't even make an educated guess. I got stuck along the way because of a construction of a building and the archeological research because of it...

The tourist information office can also give info on the Historic pubs and Inns trail.

And during the monts april to October there are volunteers that give free tours through the city. Though not every day so better ask beforehand if this interests you

St. Bartholomew's Church

by graeme83

This is an interesting little church. The design is outside is modern and inside very tastefully furnished. Unlike many of the churches in St. Albans, this one was built as recently as the 1960s. At the time there was an expected development of housing in the area. The local clergy thought that a new parish would be needed for worship. So in September 1962 they commenced building and completed it for Easter 1964. According to their website, the Roman Catholic Church here has approximately 700 regular worshipers.

The address of the church is :47 Vesta Avenue, St Albans, AL1 2PE

Remains of a Roman Theatre

by unexplored

The Roman Theatre of Verulamium is across a busy road from the museum and signposted from there. Little more than a small hollow now, but is still impressive enough and gives a real sense of how these theatres would once have looked. Further excavation is underway nearby, revealing a house and several workshops.

St Michael's Church - Exterior & history

by Willettsworld

This lovely little church lies close to the Verulamium Museum and parts of it date from the year of its foundation by the Abbot Ulsinus in 948 AD. But the church’s history goes right back to the Roman period as the church is built on the site of their basilica where the first British Christian martyr, Alban, would probably have been trailed around AD 209.

The original Saxon church forms the inside nave and chancel walls of the present building which were built from materials taken from the ruined Roman city. The church was enlarged in the 12th century when the north and south aisles were added. The tower was built in the 13th century and most of the windows date from the 14th and 15th centuries. The church was restored in 1866 by Sir George Gilbert Scott and then enlarged by Lord Grimthorpe who also lavished much money on the cathedral.

The Roman wall

by uglyscot

In Verulamium Park, which has the museum, sports grounds and children's playground, there are segments of the old city wall of Verulamium which was the third largest Roman city in Britain with a population of 8000. It dates to the 3rd Century.
Like other Roman walls it was faced with dressed flint, with narrow layers of of tiles horizontally placed at intervals of 3.3 feet. [See photo 3] Although much of the wall no longer exists it has been calculated that it was was originally 2.3 miles long, 8.2 feet thick and 13.1 feet high though none remains to its full height. It enclosed 81 hectares. . There was a huge ditch in front of the wall and strong bastions and towers on the south side of the wall.
