Travel Tips for Ware

living in ware

by mikalaurila

I spent a year living in Ware. Couldn't believe how many 'Australians' were already in the area! Really enjoyed that it was my idea of 'England'! Easy to get to by train and easy to travel to London! I miss visiting the MANY pubs, especially on cold winter evenings! So many within walking distance. Pretty river walks aswell. Enjoyed watching spring signets grow into swans over the year!

Ware. Where?

by Willettsworld

Ware is a small town of around 18,000 people located near the county town of Hertford, about 20 miles north of London. My parents used to live here before my mum had me!

"Ware is one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in Western Europe" - so wrote the archaeologist, Robert Kiln, in his book, ‘The Dawn of History in East Herts’, where he described how excavations on the GlaxoSmithKline site near Ware Lock had revealed settlements going back to the Mesolithic or Middle Stone Age of some 5,000-10,000 years ago. This is mostly due to the River Lea which flows through the town. Evidence of a Bronze Age, Roman and Saxon settlements have all been found here on one of the country’s oldest roadways, at the point where it crosses the River Lea. The road later became known as Ermine Street and later still the Old North Road, which was the main road of medieval England. The town developed during the medieval period and later as a great coaching town. England's first turnpike (toll) road ran from Wadesmill to Ware in 1663 as a result of serious deterioration of the Old North Road due to travel by laden barley wagons supplying the brewing trade from the maltings in the town. Today the town is picturesque with many of its old buildings still remaining and worthy of a little side visit from Hertford.

Crappy Ware!

by littlebush

I am sad enough to live in Ware....its a crap town about 25 miles out of central London. Its one of those clicky towns where all the locals fight on a friday night! I only live here cos I rent a cheap room off my brother which helps me to save to travel to places that are far greater than this place I hate to call home!

Scott's Grotto - Part 1

by Willettsworld

One of the most quirky sights in England, Scott's Grotto was created in the 1760s by the Quaker poet and reformer, John Scott, making it the country's largest grotto. Tucked away in a street of modern houses to the south of the town centre, it has six underground chambers connected by passages, extending for 67 feet into the chalk hillside. The grotto is decorated with shells, fossils and minerals from all around the world and was restored in 1990 by the Ware Society.

Ware Museum

by Willettsworld

The Ware Museum was established in 1986 and incorporates the town's World War II command bunker used during air raids, a medieval well discovered during building work (which you can walk on!) and an outside herb garden. Items from the museum collection on permanent display include Iron Age and Roman pottery, a Roman coffin, a unique collection of Hitch Patent Bricks and items from the pharmaceutical firm of Allen & Hanbury. There are new interactive experiences including an Archaeological Dig for children, a touch screen kiosk, talking figures and an illuminated satellite picture of Ware.
