If you live in England then I know that the perceived wisdom when travelling overseas is to take a debit card (best one is Nationwide) and use ATM?s but if you do want to get currency here then it should be easier from Summer 2008. The Post Office is trialing special ATM?s in some of their outlets that allow you to obtain Euro or US Dollars free of commission. Of course you would still need to look at the rates to see how good a deal it is but it?s certainly more convenient if you just want to get enough to cover a taxi or coffee on arrival.
The Post Offices offering this service are located around England at,
City of London
Traflagar Square
Ashford
Dartford
Harlow
Crawley
Fareham
Basingstoke
Bristol
Birmingham
Solihull
Harrogate
Stockport
In addition if you are in the City the Nat West Bank branch at 15 Bishopsgate has an ATM that dispenses Euro.
