Bridlington - resort with potential
"A slowly changing town"
Bridlington was one of England's popular holiday resorts ruined by cheap foreign packages to Spain in the 1960s and is only just slowly recovering in 2007 thanks to some forward thinking people.
Its very much a retirement town ( it is called Leeds on Sea because of all the Leeds people who come to retire here) but very much a day trip town or weekend break town.
Everything is here though - a good beach , a harbour , boats , a reasonable shopping centre and at long last some vision of the future with plans for a marina.
"Marina development desperately needed"
Look at the photos on these pages of the harbour and look how run down it looks. There is certainly a lot of interest in the harbour - there is still a small fishing fleet and assorted boats and yachts but look at the containers and general rubbish in some of the photos! The local council and business leaders have proposed a marina that will improve the harbour area, bring new jobs and attract more visitors but the Harbour Commissioners have blocked the plans.
Without the marina Bridlington will not move forwards but still stay as it is with only minor improvements such as the Eye and the Spa development.
