Travel Tips for Cleethorpes

A piece of advice on taxation

by sourbugger

Those theiving little people at the tax office will be grasping their 17.5% in VAT (value added tax) for any amusement ride that you use in Cleethorpes.

Even the donkeys on the beach are rated at 17.5%, as can be seen from this excerpt from Hansard (journal of the House of commons)

"Mr. Michael Brown: Is my hon. Friend aware that I have a question for written answer on the Order Paper for answer next week asking him to clarify the position with regard to zero-rating VAT on pleasure rides? Is he aware that in Cleethorpes people are concerned about whether VAT will be put on donkey rides on Cleethorpes beach? Will he clear up that matter, as those donkey rides are an important part of the local economy?

Mr. Heathcoat-Amory: Public transport will continue to be zero rated. Unfortunately, beach donkeys do not constitute public transport, even in Cleethorpes, but at the standard rate of 17.5 per cent. I am sure that they represent excellent value.

I love the line about "even in Cleethorpes".

The owners of a rollercoaster in Blackpool tried to get their ride zero-rated for VAT, claiming it was a form of public transport. The Taxman pointed out that the train returned to the same place, without an intermediate stop - and they won their case in court.

Perhaps the donkey owners ought to offer a one-way service and then a seperate payment to come back ?

The Bonio's (re)visit to Cleethorpes

by bonio

"A very wet weekend!"

A revisit after around 15 years, Cleethorpes is still pretty much what is expected of a British seaside resort.
Were heading home from a trip further "up north" and here was the ideal stopping off place for us, and a chance to catch up with Mrs Bonio's favourite footie team - Rochdale.
So, a couple of good eating places, some things to do and a b&b to mention, and of course, our visit to Blundell Park.
Please take a look at what we did.

"Grimsby Town v Rochdale"

A visit to Blundell Park for the first time in 15 years, not too much had changed!
More on this in sports tip later.
