London to Cowes?
by carteki
Hi,
Could you assist with the most efficient way of getting from London to Cowes. I arrive at LHR in the morning and would like to know what is the best connection to get to Cowes.
Also, is there a ferry connection between IOW and Jersey?
Thank you.
Kim

Trains run from London Victoria to Portsmnouth Harbour. Ferries sail from Portsmouth to Jersey.

Take the rail-link bus from Heathrow to Reading then catch a train to Southampton (possbily changing at Eastleigh). Red funnel lines then have regular services to East or West Cowes. The trainline.com offer an all in one booking service showing at 35GBP for a single journey to West Cowes which seems good value.

Sorry, here's a better link for the railair bus

Your best bet for an onward journey is to go to Portsmouth on one of the many ferries from the West side of the island then get a Condor Ferry to Jersey.

catch train (south east trains) from london victoria directly to southampton central (not airport). get off and ask for free bus to red funnel ferry terminal. hope on free bus (they come about every 15 minutes) takes about 7 minutes to terminal. Then make sure you get on the passenger ferry (NOT THE CAR FERRY). Passenger ferry takes approx 23 minutes car ferry takes around about an hour. passenger ferry will take you into west cowes which is where most of shops etc is. east cowes means you have to catch a chain ferry accross which does not take long but can mean a bit of an extra wait. you can get ferrys to isle of wight from lymington and portsmouth but they take you to different parts of isle of wight and public transport on the isle is horrid and relatively expensive.
Travel Tips for Cowes
Yachting Mecca
by yachtjudge
COWES WEEK.
The town hums with activity. Watching the starts from the Royal Yacht Squadron Startline, seeing yachts tack close inshore "beating up" Cowes Green. Catching the after race party atmosphere on the high street.
Then there are the local sights - Osborne House (Queen Victoria saw "America" win the America's cup from the lawn)
Even better try to get on the water to watch the racing. Or if you are an active sailor try and catch a ride - there are always boats looking for crew.
. My second Cowes Week.
- Racing on a class 1 yacht, winning races and being rewarded with tickets to yacht club balls. Black tie dinners, dancing and then trying to sail fast the next morning.
