The Hermitage Country House: Hotel in its own park

by PatSteffen

Lovely hotel in its own park, as I mentioned.
We stayed here on a 3-day package and it was worse every penny.
A very friendly welcome with tea, coffee and homemade cake.
Our room was full of sun in the morning and nice and airy in the evening.
Breakfast - very good. I loved the omelette !
I defintily would go there again, can only recommend it.
By the way....they only take bookings for adults.

Nice terrace, garden and nice walks up the hill to St.Catherines Down

Bed and breakfast: The grange

by philton

Our stay was comfortable and relaxing and I would recommend the bed and breakfast to anyone.

The grange had beautiful gardens and it was looked after and kept clean.

Kenbury Lodge: Bit tight for space

by JBourne

Minus points - small room, noisy bar late into the evening, slightly frosty hotelier.
Plus points - great breakfasts, good location, lots of local info that was up to date.

I wouldn't stay here again, although I'm sure some of the rooms that aren't above the bar are quieter. Shanklin is a great town though, and I'd stay in this bit of the island again.

Best Western New Holmwood Hotel: a decent hotel

by SurfaceTravel

We stayed here with our two year old daughter for a weekend. It's a plain hotel with all the minimum requirements. The room was small (or normal size by European standards), but nice, with a nice view over the beach and an adequate en-suite bathroom.

The service was good, as was the breakfast.

There is free parking out front and it is on the edge of Cowes, though still only a 15 minute walk to the centre, or to the Red Funnel predestrian ferry.

Rosemary Guest House: Small family run B & B

by Helga67

The Rosemary Guest House is a B&B in a lovely Victorian setting. It is situated close to the Esplanade and Old Village (5 min. walk). The cliff path and lift are at the end of the street giving convenient access to the beach.

Rooms have en-suite bathroom. Ask for room number 1. It's a spacious room with balcony overlooking the front garden and sea.

Bedford Lodge Hotel, Shanklin: The opposite of Basil Fawlty

by Spincat

We tried this place after driving round the island for sometime looking for a hotel that a) had vacancies b) didn't smell of boiled cabbage c) wasn't in the middle of nowhere. So this hotel with its pretty garden felt like the last place we would try before giving up. How lucky we were.

The hotel is situated above the carpark in Shanklin old village, and near a slip road leading to the Chine. It has lovely wooded gardens, complete with palms, outdoor tables and morning birdsong. You are only a few minutes here from some of the better pubs and restaurants in Shanklin and yet in a quiet spot.

The public rooms and the garden are the most attractive things about the hotel, apart from the very friendly owners. There is a small bar and a house dog.

There were no single rooms available when we turned up, so we as well as us taking a double room, my mother-in-law got another double, with £10 knocked off the price. Both rooms were light and clean with good views over the gardens. There were soft toys on the beds which acted as a 'do not disturb' system if placed outside your door. TV (slight 'snowstorm' reception); plenty of room and storage space. The rooms were slightly bland, but perfectly comfortable and there was plenty of hot water.

Only real negative comment would be the breakfast. Generous helpings but just not that great, and the sausage my husband had seemed a bit recycled. Experience has taught me breakfasts in B&Bs can vary from day to day. Suspect standard usually higher.

Far and away the best thing about the hotel : its charming owners. We were greeted by the most laid back man in the universe - how does he stay that way after working in the hotel trade? His wife, too, was most understanding when Withnail and I (me and mother-in-law) staggered in after a late night in Shanklin old village.

Farringford - Isle of Wight: Home of Alfred Lord Tennyson

by wlightfoot

• Had a great stay at Farringford, the home of Alfred Lord Tennyson. (I was in room # 1, top right window in the attached PIC. The guy I was with stayed in Tennyson’s room)
The personnel were very gracious, very good food, and plenty of beer and stories!

Gurnard Pines: Gurnard Pines

A nice resort where you get independant houses to stay.
Very good for families groups of more than four. The resort has a lot of facilities, please check their web site for full details.
They have a good coffee shop, a super market where u get most of the necessary stuffs, a bar/pub, nite club, tennis court, swimming pool .......

They have a restaurant but is not open during christmas and new year weekend.
All houses have kitchen.....so try out the chef in you

Pheasant Cottage: In the middle of the island

by Valbox

A lovely cottage, in peaceful surroundings.
A self contained cottage with 2 bedrooms, which sleeps 4. Recently modernised, I think.
All the comforts of home - even a toy box to keep children occupied.
A lovely place to stay. We would love to visit again soon.

A 10 minute walk away is the delightful village of Godshill, with plenty to see. They have a smashing Model Village, plus Pubs, Tea Shops, Produce Shops, and Gift Shops. Please put this village on your list of places to visit - give yourself, a good few hours.

Being in the centre of the island, its a perfect location to base your holiday with nowhere being more than about 20 minutes away.

The Isle of Wight is teaming with other things to do, and places to see :
Garlic Farm
Historic Houses & Castles
Beaches
Piers
Dino Isle Museum
Fossil Hunt anywhere - you'll be bound to find something!
Alum Bay - Not only has the amazing different coloured sands, but other attractions to make it a whole day visit.
Amazon World
This is just some of the places we visited, but there is so much more.

Situated on an Organic farm, the only neighbours Pheasant Cottage has, are the owners who live in the farmhouse nearby, their livestock, and their pets. All of whom we were very pleased to meet.

Ashleigh House hotel: Ashleigh

by kitty5

It was quite nice with friendly people, but the things were a bit old and the bathroom was tiny. It's not bad with a good location between Sandown and Shanklin in Lake. The service was good. I'd probably go elsewhere though if I were to go again because the bathroom was too small so turning round meant losing a bit of my elbow!

Nice location if you're driving.
