Dover to Canterbury

by bwerner

Hi. We are disembarking in Dover from a cruise on April 28th. We'd like to spend some time in Dover, then go to Canterbury, tour on our own there and stay overnight. Since we'll be hauling our luggage around, is there anywhere in Dover we could leave the luggage while we go to the castle, etc., before taking the train, or other transportation, to Canterbury?

Also suggestions for good B&B's in Canterbury and the best way to get to Heathrow from Canterbury would be appreciated. Thanks! I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to ask about Dover.

It's fine to ask about Dover here....all UK questions turn up in the UK (and Europe, and World) forum, so nearly everyone whho has some knowledge will see them.

There are, I am afraid, no left luggage facilities in Dover Port. This is because of security issues. As far as I am aware there are no facilities elsewhere in the town either. You could email the Dover tourist information people on tic@doveruk.com and ask for their suggestions (I am sure you will not be the first to do so).It is possible that local hotels etc are willing to store luggage for you (at a a price, obviously).

To get to Heathrow from Canterbury you have two public transport options: long-distance bus (coach) or train.

www.nationalrail.co.uk will give you train times, details and fares. Journey takes around 3 hours (with changes, into London and out again). One-way fares from 27.50GBP (depends on train time).

www.nationalexpress.com for coach times and fares (and booking). Journey takes 3-4 hours, one-way fare 17.10GBP.

You could also get a local taxi transfer, which will be quicker but cost more. Example company here (google 'canterbury heathrow transfer' for more):

I always recommend YHA - it's not just for young but for young-at-heart too.
They have a hostel in Canterbury:
https://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/south-east-england/hostels/canterbury/index.aspx
15.95 a night including breakfast.

but not in Dover. The crackpot management must have closed that some time ago, along with other popular hostels in major tourist areas.

When check-in hours are limited, they often have a safe luggage store for daytime arrivals.

The following is a very good site for finding B&Bs all over the UK. I especially like it because there are good photos of the places.

Sadly there are no left luggage facilities in Dover. The easiest way from Canterbury to Heathrow is to take the National Express coach from Canterbury Bus Station, where you can then step onto another coach to Heathrow. Any other route will involve a long walk across the concourse of Victoria railway station and dragging your luggage downstairs to the Underground, or outside to a waiting cab.

Internet Cafes

by kentishgirl

Ive never actually used them here but there are two.

One is located right in town next to O Briens Sandwich Bar, and the other is down near Canterbury West Station, right next door to Brockmans Travel Agent.

The Interior Of Canterbury Cathedral...

by coceng

Canterbury is the origins of The English Christianity. It is the site where St. Augustine, the monk sent by Gregory the Great to Christianize the English, baptized King Etherbert of Kent on Whit Sunday in 597. Augustine became the first Archbishop of Canterbury, and his church, dedicated to Christ Jesus, was later burned by the Danes during the reign of Archbishop Alphege.

Once you are in Canterbury, just walk. Anything you want to get to will be within walking distance, cars are just a nuisance, and if you walk, you will be able to take in the amazing architecture and capture the flavor of the city.

Italian

by kentishgirl about Little Italy

This is the BEST Italian in town, located in the middle of the high street, the restaurant looks small from the outside, but the building stretches back quite far.

It is always busy, the service is excellent, the food brilliant and the atmosphere is really good too. Spaghetti Napoleonata or Pizza - loads of Garlic on everything!!

Pub Grub

by kentishgirl about Wetherspoons at Westgate

Ok Im talking lunches again!!

There are 2 Wetherspoons pubs in town but the one at Westgate as opposed to Burgate is much better.

People like this pub because unlike others they have a no smoking area, they dont allow any kids-you must be 18 to go in, they dont play any music, and their drink is cheap. Between certain hours they do 2 meals for £5, I think its up till 1430?!?

However, their food is cheap anyway, my favourite is the Lamb Minted burger, but I also love the Chicken and Bacon Salad!
