Travel Tips for Folkestone

Folkestone Tip

by Johnro

My fondest thing about Folkestone is in the past; it used to be a lovely and friendly place to live. One could jump on a ferry to France. It would take you a while to visit all the shops...now; there is a desolate harbour with a huge car-park where the lively bustling Rotunda and swimming pool used to be. One walks through the town centre with rubbish everywhere, it's dropped not only by youngsters but by their parents too. People sit on the grass along the Leas eating their MacDonalds food and leave their rubbish when they leave. The old High street used to be full of a variety of shops but now all you find is so called Art which is mostly a load of rubbish. Shepway councilors should be shot for allowing this to happen to a once thriving town where people wanted to visit. All I can say to those of you who think this town is a great place to live is, You should travel more and see what Folkestone should be like. Have you all seen the building on Grace Hill? with a forrest of tree's growing on its roof with its interior infested with Rats? Everywhere is closing and becoming derilict...It wouldn't supprise me if Folkestone too is closed. I grew up in Folkestone and am now ashamed of the way it is. Nobody seems to care anymore!

THE ANTIQUES VILLAGE

by whitecliff62

This is Sandgate, which is just outside Folkestone on the coast road to Hythe. Its a lovely little village and very popular in the summer with its long pebble beach. Sandgate's clame to fame is its antiques shops, there are loads of them. v.t staff have promist me that they will place Sandgate on the map, untill then i have had to put it on my Folkestone pages, as soon as Sandgate has a location i will add more information on this lovely village

THE OLD SWING BRIDGE

by whitecliff62

This is the old swing bridge in Folkestone harbour. The old steam trains used to chug down to the harbour to collect people from the cross channel paddle steamers, and this brilliant piece of engineering used to turn the steam trains around fof the journey home. Sadly wit the demise of the cross channel ferries from Folkestone this section of railway has not been used for years

FOLKESTONE MUSEUM

by whitecliff62

Not many visitors to Folkestone realise that there is a great museum here, the museum specialises in Roman Britian in this area because Kent was the first part of Britain to be developed by the Romans in AD43, so this part of Kent is steeped in Roman history. The museum also contains material from the Wear bay Roman Villa site, near the Warren Folkestone which was excavated in 1924

FOLKESTONE MUSEUM

Folkestone, Canterbury, Hythe and area.

by jolou

This is the area that I come from originally and where my family still live. There isn't a huge amount of information here, mainly because I keep forgetting to take photos when I visit and also my knowledge of places to go to may be a bit out of date as I tend not to get much further than the village pub when I visit for weekends! Anyway i hope that my tips manage to give some helpful view on what to see or do in the area.
