Parking on the sea front
by redflame100
We visited Margate on a Saturday evening in November and were pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to park (this may not be the same in the summer!).
We parked at the harbour car park which is right on the sea front and parking was only 30p per hour.
However, we struggled to use our 2 hours in Margate - great parking, shame about the place.

This postcard is of The Shell Grotto in Margate. The Grotto is definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. It's only small, but quite fascinating. It's estimated there are about 4.6 million shells covering the walls and ceilings of the tunnels. It was discovered in 1835 although nobody's quite sure what it was for. Some ideas are an ancient pagan temple or a secret cult meeting place.
I'd suggest getting a leaflet from the tourist office for directions, but it's located on Grotto Hill - in the middle of a residential street.
Opening times are Easter to Halloween 10am - 5pm daily and in winter, weekends only 11am - 4pm. The website is www.shellgrotto.co.uk.

Margate is a perfect destination for summer holidays, weekend trip or even one day trip from London. We were there several times and really enjoyed the beach. If you're looking for having your holidays at the seaside on the eastern coast of England, I would recommend you to go to Margate;-)
I was there:
July, 2005
June, 2007
