Seeking pleasant overnight stay in Leicester vicinity

by smeans2

Need to break a fairly long drive with an overnight stay around my half-way point, which is Leicester. I have found an acceptable hotel on the edge of the city, but as a visiting Anglophile Yank who doesn't know Leicestershire, I'd prefer a village or town in the area that would make a pleasant overnight stay. I will be approaching Leicester from Melton Mobray and heading on to Warwick and the Cotswolds the next day. My planned route would take me through (around) Leicester, but I don't mind a little detour.

My neck of the woods!

Leicester is an interesting city to explore (see my pages) but there are alternatives.

Without knowing your budget it's not easy, but somewhere near Newton Linford might be nice (with the superb Bradgate Park, childhood home of Lady Jane Grey to wander, as well as Swithland Woods and Beacon hill).

E.g.

Rothley is a pleasant place nearby;

or Quorn:

Another possiblity is the small market town of Market Bosworth (see my pages). It's near the site of the Battle of Bosworth, where Richard lll was killed and the Tudor dynasty began (the site has a good visitor centre/museum and walks). Market Bosworth has some pleasant pubs and places to eat, and a hotel:

Hinckley is nothing special, but there are lots of interesting villages nearby (and the battlefield is only 5 miles away). So you might consider Sketchley Grange:

or the Barcelo:

Both just off the M69, which you will be using to get from Leicester to Warwick.

A couple of minutes away from these hotels (and the M69) is an truly excellent farm b&b:

run by my friends (I know it's excellent because my adult children have stayed there, not simply from personal bias!). You will feel as if you are in the middle of nowhere (sheep, birds, sky, garden, fields) and will have a superb breakfast at a fraction of the price you'll pay for a hotel. There's a good pub-with-food within walking distance as well.

Hope this gives you some ideas. :-)

Don't you have a spare room for hire, J?

I do, though not for hire.

But my friends' farm is sooooo much nicer. I'd stay there if I could! :-))

Travel Tips for Leicester

Leicester And Her Surroundings

by Nixter01

LEICESTERs a city of vibrant colours, cultures and flavours, with Indian, Mexican. Chinese, Italian, English and much, much more.
There is also more to Leicester than meets the eye, for example, the beautiful countryside ( See my Bradgate Park page ) fantastic Mosques, historic buildings and history that goes with it, and its national attractions such as the National Space Centre, and Leicester's very own ' Golden Mile ' which is a street lined from top to toe with jewellers dealing Asian jewellery. This is a must see for any visitor to Leicester

"Leicester Botanic Gardens"

Leicester Botanic Gardens are situated on Leicester's University , and are a world away from the drunken students.
There are tree's, shrubs, plants of all varities from all over the world in here and they have made a little piece of heaven in the middle of Leicester.

"Flower Garden leading to Water Area"

Another part of the Botanic Gardens, you will need a good half or perhaps a day to take in everything here. This leads onto a long and narrow pond, with lillies, dragonflies ( very pretty blue&green ones to ! ) fish and more.
