The Lincoln imp is a legendary little gargoyle inside Lincoln Cathedral. There are all sorts of legends associated with it. One says he was turned to stone by the angels because he caused mayhem in the cathedral. The many disasters that have befallen the cathedral, including the earthquake and fire, are also attributed to him.The stone imp looks down on St. Hugh's Head Shrine, just to the left of the East Window.
The imp is now the official symbol of Lincoln City Football Club, who are nicknamed the Imps.
........in the cathedral. It's near the angel choir, and belongs to Bishop Richard Fleming, who died in 1431. It's unusual, because it is made up of two tiers...................the top one has the bishop in all his finery, the lower has his cadaver displayed in its winding sheet.
The Lincoln Christmas market only began in 1982, but now attracts up to 150,000 people over just one weekend at the beginning of December each year.
Centered around the back of the castle area and the Cathedral there are nowadays some 300 stalls. I can't pretend that it is really my cup of tea, and I don't think it is a patch of the Christmas market I saw in Leipzig, but many seem to enjoy it's charms.
The last time I went it was piddling with rain, most of the stalls sold the same stuff you could find year-round, whilst the funfair obviously preserved the true spirit of Christmas - cheap packaging for a quick buck.
Still, don't take my word for it.
The Norman House on Steep Hill was built between 1170 and 1190, and along with the nearby Jew's House is one of the oldest surviving domestic dwellings in England. The original Norman doorway and window are beautifully preserved.
