Newport Arch, standing at the end of Bailgate, the oldest surviving Roman Arch that is still serving in Britain! (Meaning there may be others that are older but are not in a city centre with a road through them).

Can I build a real one now ?

by sourbugger

"I have always held and am prepared against all evidence to maintain that the cathedral of Lincoln is out and out the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles and roughly speaking worth any two other cathedrals we have." John Ruskin 1819-1900

It can only get this good when you have an army of masons serving long apprenticeship, with skills handed down from father to son. Evidence of their long training can be found inside Lincoln Cathedral on the right hand side near the main crossover. Here you find what is called the 'apprentices wall' where deigned are practiced. They begin quite simply, but some of them involve animals, or angels or the like. Perhaps they were then ready to start on the real thing.

It struck me that nothing reallly changes : modern apprentices of bricklaying will spend all day building a wall, only for it to me marked and knocked down. Next day ? just repeat the whole process until you get it right !

Don't forget the Chapter House...............

.....................in Lincoln cathedral. It has a wonderful 'umbrella' roof, and beautiful wall-paintings. It's rare for these to survive in UK religious buildings, so make sure you don't miss them. You don't have to pay extra.

Variety of Shops on Steep Hill

by supercarys

Steep Hill is the continuation of the high street and leads all the way up to Lincoln Cathedral. It is full of a wide variety of shops, from home made ice cream to second hand book shops, most are in the 'ye olde' vein. It is a very pretty part of town and well worth a visit for a leisurely stroll.

Pride comes before a fall

by sourbugger

The wooden carved choir stall in Lincoln Cathedral are considered to be one of it's great treasures.

The craftsmen who built them must have much more of a 'free hand' here than elsewhere in the building. There are about 100 seats in total, each one individually crafted with fifferent symbols - many of them animals and men fighting animals.
"No 16 Ketton — two monkeys, one riding on a lion, and the other riding on a unicorn" would be a good example.

The stalls are now pretty much roped off to prevent any damage, although a 'touchy-feely' section has been established nearby where you can get to grips with replicas of some of the more impressive pieces such as the one of a knight falling off a horse - showing pride before a fall.
