Castle walls
by Sjalen
One of my favourite things to do in Lincoln is to walk along the walls in the castle. Not least because you get great views of the Lincolnshire plain I mentioned in the introduction. It feels like you could see to the other end of England on a clear day.
Boundary markers...............
by leics
......the historical part of Lincoln around the cathedral (the Bail) did not come under the governance of the local council until the mid-19th century. You can still see boundary markers, to show where the Bail started. Except that you won't see them (I didn't) unless you are looking. This one is on Steep Hill................it's about a metre high, on the left as you walk down towards lower Lincoln.
Lincoln Castle
by Tom_Fields
This castle still has a working courthouse and gaol (jail). Here, during Victorian times, a new experiment in penology was carried out. It was called the Pentonville System. Prisoners were isolated from each other as well as from guards. It was thought that the deprivation of human contact would help reform them. In fact, it drove many of them crazy. To this day, the castle has a working courthouse and goal.
Lincoln Castle's office has one of the four surviving copies of the Magna Carta. Visitors are not allowed to photograph it, but it's a must-see.
"World Famous" Christmas Market
by supercarys
Many people in Lincoln insisted that this huge Christmas market was WORLD FAMOUS. All I can say to that is "I'd never heard of it". In fact, I'd never even heard of Lincoln!
This Christmas market goes for four days a few weeks before Christmas. It is the larget is Europe and extends all the way from the cathedral, through the castle and around the back, through many of the side streets and back again. You have to trek up Steep Hill to get there (unless you're smart and park at the top of the hill) but it's definitely worth it if you want to do some Christmas shopping. There is a huge variety of stalls with lots of free samples (including liqueurs, ales and cheeses) and many delicacies that will have you sniffing the air hungrily!
There is a one way system operating that means you can only go in one direction from the cathedral to the castle. You even get to go into the castle without charge - there is usually a fee for entry.
Now that's what I call carving....

The Romanesque (12 th century) frieze has been restored to it's former glory. It has taken about 17 years of sorting out, during which time the dominant image of the cathedral has been that of scaffolding. Boy, would I have liked the contract for that job.
What is left is probably only a small part of what Bishop Alexander installed, but isn't that always the case with with redecoration ?
Anyway, here is a list of the panels that can now be seen. The are situated over the doorways on the west front. Some great titles here.
