Travel Tips for Lincoln

by steventilly
The gate at the bottom of the hill, known as Stonebow. The Guildhall sits aside and above this gateway. Beyond the gate away from the bottom of the hill is the busy newer part of the city of Lincoln, with many shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants.
Eleanor Cross
by iwys
After Queen Eleanor of Castile died of fever, just outside Lincoln, in 1290, her husband, King Edward I ordered the erection of stone crosses wherever her coffin rested on its journey to London. The one in Lincoln Castle is the first, but the most famous is the replica in Charing Cross.
FIND THE IMP !
by DAO
The Imp is made from stone and is very high up in the Lincoln Cathedral. Legend has it that the small devilish little creature sought refuge inside the Cathedral and that the North Wind blew in and froze him into stone. Not a great story, but just try and find him! He is small!
Visit the castle..........................
by leics
..............not only because it is a most impressive example of Norman castle architecture, but also because it housed a Victorian prison. You can walk some of the walls (with excellent views), and make sure you visit the prison chapel. During the mid-19th century prisoners were kept in solitary confinement for 22 hours a day, and the chapel is designed to ensure they saw no-one other than the chaplain. Prisoners were hanged here too, and some are buried within the Norman keep (Lucy Tower). I found that place had an oppressive atmosphere, even before I knew about the burials.
Finest in the land
by sourbugger
It can reasonably be argued that Lincoln Cathedral is one of the finest buildings in England.
Not only is it a building of impressive size, but it was also sited on top of a hill. This means that it can be see (in certain directions) from up to 20 miles away.
It was also the tallest bulding in the world for over 200 years (see seperate tip). Some of the fine architectural and artistic features are also mentioned in some of the other tips. These include the romanesque frieze and the Tournai font. In addition, don't miss the lincoln imp.
An absolute must-see in the truest sense.
