Accommodation

by Glen30

Hello,

I am flying to Liverpool early next year to watch the LIVE Stictly Come Dancing.

http://www.strictlycomedancinglive.co.uk/default.asp?contentID=644

The show will take place at the "Liverpool Echo Arena". Could someone recommend some B&Bs which are within walking distance from this Arena. I don't have to worry much about transport after the show.

Thanks
Glen

The Echo Arena is on the waterfront, so you may struggle to find B&Bs in the immediate area. If you are looking for budget accommodation in Liverpool centre you could consider Travelodge - there are 2 Travelodges in Liverpool, both within walking distance of the Arena. www.travelodge.co.uk.

You could check out prices for the dates you wantb in Liverpool, plus for the other cities you are looking to visit.

Travel Tips for Liverpool

Home of the Beatles

by deeper_blue

Liverpool became world famous due to the Beatles. You can trace the history of the fab four by visiting the Cavern, (the live music club the Beatles often performed in). Seeing The Beatles Story Experience at the Albert Dock; or for real fans you can take the Magical Mystery tour, and see the famous landmarks immortalised in their songs, such as Penny Lane and Strawberry fields. Guess who the John Lennon airport at Speke is named after??

Canadian Memorial

by sandysmith

I wish I'd noticed this when Laura visited Liverpool with me:

Canada Boulevard, running infront of the Cunard Building with its row of maple trees, is "decidated as a living memorial to the sacrifice, valour and industry of Canadians in the defence of freedom during the battle of the Atlantic 1939-1945
And in recognition of the special relationship that developed between Cananda and the city of Liverpool during those dark days"
This memorial stone was placed here on 15th May 1995 on the 50th anniversary.

Also on the Boulevard the stones in the pavemment bear the nnames of the ships.
One I particularly noticed was HMCS Charlottetown, Canadians who contributed to the victory on the homefront.

Everton Football club

by William1982

A common question 'you come from Liverpool so why don't you support Liverpool FC?'. I've heard this a number of times from various travelers. In truth, Everton were the original club in Liverpool, founded in 1878 and originally playing their football at Anfield Road, now the home of Liverpool FC. Everton are officially the fourth most succesful side in English football, behind Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal. Only the recent dominance by the last two has taken them away from 'us Blues'.

Down the years Everton has had some of the best players the country has ever seen. Dixie Dean will remain the greatest ever striker England has produced, Alan Ball was a World Cup winner in 1966, Gary Lineker spent a season at Goodison Park where he was top goalscorer with 38 goals and Paul Gasgoigne also spent some time with the club. There's also the home nations legends who have worn our famous Royal blue. Neville Southall was one of the best goalkeepers in the world, for Everton and Wales, Greame Sharp was a Scottish legend and scored goals for fun, the original great midfield of Kendall, Ball and Harvey. Foreign stars have included the mercurial Swede Anders Limpar and the exceptional skills of Russian Andrei Kanchelskis. Then of course there is the current hope, Wayne Rooney, a local boy on course to be the latest Goodison Park legend.

Honours:
-9 League titles (7 times runners up); 5 F.A. Cups (7 times runners up); League cup 2 times runners up; 8 Charity shields; 1 European Cup Winners Cup

George's Dock Tower

by sandysmith

People often wonder what this building is - found just behind the Liver buildings on Mann Island. Well this stately tower hides one of the two main ventilation shafts for the Mersey Tunnels (the other being on the river bank opposite in Birkenhead).

It was designed by Herbert J Rowse and along with the tunnel mouths, the tower was badly damaged in the war and was largely rebuilt by Rowse in 1951-2.

Hardman St.

by William1982

The place to go for students and those looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, without needing the smart threads is Hardman St., next to the bombed church. Live music can also be found here, keep an eye out for notices or just ask. Recommended is Hannah's Bar and the retro Magnet. Casual
