Great rooms but eat out

by TripAdvisor Member NITripper

My wife and I stayed for two nights - a Friday and Saturday.
Reception staff were helpful and friendly. The room was good - bed comfortable and air con seemed to be working fine (we were on the 3rd floor). Bathrom well equipped and spotlessly clean so no complaints with the room at all.
Breakfast however was another story. The hot buffet was poor - food in many cases either cold or overdone or (both). Quite possibly the worst orange juice I have had in any hotel of any standard - anywhere. On the first morning the coffee was also cold.
On the second morning we had to ask for tea and coffee twice before it was brought to us and then had the same experience to get some toast. The restaurant staff just seemed to be going through the motions and looked as though no one was organising them. Some (not all) of them could do with a wash and brush up too!
The bar seemed fine but like many of these chains lacks any atmosphere. The hotel is in a good location - very handy to the shops and sights. This has the potential to be a really good place to stay when visiting Chester but we concluded that what it really needs is some competition from the 4 star market to sharpen it up a bit. We won't be staying here again until it does.

Very nice Hotel close to Chester City Centre

by TripAdvisor Member crystalcuba

Very nice, comfortable hotel a couple of minutes walk from the City centre. Lovely breakfast with plenty of choice and good service. Very nice, modern rooms and friendly staff. Will definitely stay again if visiting Chester. Evening meal was also very good although restaurant a little chilly. Highly recommended.

Great location and service

by TripAdvisor Member Venturer7

My wife and I have just spent an excellent long weekend in Chester staying at the Crowne Plaza. After being efficiently checked in by the friendly staff we were given a free upgrade in to an Excecutive Double on the fourth floor overlooking the race course with the Welsh hills in the distance. The room was very clean with an abundance of towels and other consumables for our use. The hotel was nicely decorated and showed limited signs of wear and tear. After unpacking we ventured out and found that we were excellently placed within the city to explore all the shops, restaurants and bars.

The following day we went down for breakfast to be greeted by a friendly waiter who showed us to our table immediately. The breakfast choice was excellent, fruit, serials, pastries and a cooked breakfast on offer. Everything we had was good including the freshly made toast, coffee and tea brought to the table. All cooked food was well prepared and served hot.

The next step was to find the bus station for a trip to Chester Zoo. We were pleased to find that this was a short walk away from our location and sunny weather made it a great day out. To relax on our return we tried the pool and sauna facilities which were, again, very clean and well run. Fresh towels on entry to the pool were provided by the friendly staff.

Following another evening out we had a great night with another good experience at breakfast.

All in all, the combination of a well run, well placed hotel in a charming city made our weekend away one to remember. From our experience I can recommend this hotel and we intend to visit again with friends in the near future.

Good views ... good fruit

by TripAdvisor Member Muuranker

The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Bar/restaurant staff in particular seemed really concerned about our tastes. However, eating out is a good choice (not any reflection upon the hotel, it's just that Chester has some really good places to eat, within a short walk of the hotel).

Breakfast service varied .... coffee was always drinkable. The fruit selection in the buffet was invariably better than basic, and often good to excellent. English breakfast selection was uninspired, although the choice of sausages is a nice touch, and the mushrooms always tasted of mushroom rather than water.

The views from the restaurant are good, when Chester isn't mist-bound.

As others have said: book the car-park. The vouchers for the overflow car park were not honoured (i.e. a penalty was issued) for friends of ours who turned up later than we did.

Overnight stay

by TripAdvisor Member JackMan_ValleyGirl

We were upgraded to an executive room upon check-in which was fab, we had booked for a 1 night stay on a Saturday. A great start to our weekend. The hotel is just a hop skip and jump from all shops, pubs, restaurant and nightclubs. The staff were friendly and approachable. The pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi were all excellent, the jacuzzi was slightly too warm for our liking, but each to their own. This facility was excellent, well run with towels provided, we also had robes provided in our room which could be used to go to the pool etc instead of changing when you are there. This was a very relaxing way to enjoy our weekend between shopping, eating and drinking! Contrary to other reviews on this hotel we had no problems parking in the hotel car park and even if the car park had been full we could have used the multi storey which is situated in the same building for the same price that we were charged for the hotel car park. The room was very clean, spacious and modern, the bathroom was clean and adequate.
All in all a very relaxing enjoyable stay.
A tip for those of you who normally look for breakfast elsewhere, we only paid £5 each for an all you can eat full English breakfast which was excellent, also included was a continental version.

Would also recommend a restaurant in the centre of chester called Caffe Uno, an Italian which was excellent and Raffles, a Chinese which was also good, both 5 mins from the hotel.

excellent hotel

by TripAdvisor Member nutz31

me and my girlfriend stayed at the crowne plaza on a 2 night deal, we was after a nice hotel with good facilities ( swimming pool, gym etc) with a good location for the town center and we were definatly not disappointed. the hotel is right next to the town just a 2 minute walk, when we arrived the reception were more than helpful and got us checked in quickly. our room was spotless and spacious. we used all the facilities and they were excellent again the staff very helpfull. as for the breakfast ive got no idea how anyone can complain its great they serve it till 11 so you can have a nice lie in and the choice of food was excellent.....
the only and i mean only thing which is a negative is you pay extra for parking your car but it is discounted for staying at the hotel and cost £7.50 for 2 days stay.

if you are after a short break away chester is excellent and so is the crowne plaza........

Good for business

by TripAdvisor Member hairy_haggis

this is a great hotel for business in chester, especially if you get upgraded to an executive room!! the rooms are clean and the newly installed airconditioning is a god-send in the summer.

this hotel is slap bang in the middle of chester which means you don't need to eat in the hotel (not a bad thing!!) and you can go out for a few drinks in the nearby restaurants and pubs!

the leisure centre is excellent and there is a spa if you fancy a little pampering!!

Lovely Weekend Away

by TripAdvisor Member yvonnemarie83

Stayed at this Hotel Friday and Saturday night in July.

After arriving at about 7:30pm on the Friday night, it took us a long time to try and park; you can’t park in the hotel car park until after you have checked in – a little bizzare. We ended up paying at the car park next to hotel, checking in and then moving the car. A bit of a pain, but not a problem.

We upgraded to an Executive Room for £40 per night. This allowed us into the Executive Lounge on the 3rd floor. This lounge serves continental breakfast (very nice!!) and canapés at selected times. There is also a complimentary self service bar with lager, such as Becks, Stella, Corona, etc, Smirnoff Ice, and a variety of soft drinks such as J20 and Pepsi etc up until 9pm. Safe to say we spent a lot of time in there.

The Hotel was very clean and rooms were clean and spacious, however I believe that the standard rooms are also nice and there is not much difference between the standard and executive. The main advantage to ourselves was the Executive Lounge. In the executive rooms there is also a free newspaper service.

The full breakfast in the main restaurant was lovely; constantly being changed for fresh food and a wide variety of different foods.

Although we did encounter a few problems, e.g. there was no bath robes in the bedroom on both nights, and we had to ask for them, the staff were willing to help and were quick to resolve issues.

Couple of things to remember if you are staying at this Hotel. 1) Try not to let the parking annoy you, it is a pain, but not really a big problem. 2) Use the do not disturb sign in the morning as we were woke quite early by the cleaners on the first morning. 3) Also be aware that the walls between the rooms are thin!!

All in all – a fabulous weekend had by us both!!

Everything Was Good!

by TripAdvisor Member Hilltop7

What a pleasure to be able to say everything was good!.
The City, the restaurants we used,(see separate reviews)the people! and the Hotel!. We booked using the hotels web page CrownePlaza.com and booked the basic room rate although it stated that our individual requests may not be met, they were. We got our quiet room at the back of the hotel, twin beds and non smoking. There were duvets, extra pillows, bottled water,a kettle (Hurrah) tea coffee makings & biscuits.Everything was replaced each day of our 3 night stay! There was also a mini bar, a trouser press and ironing board a hair dryer that was not attached to bathroom wall! and all the usual bathroom niceties. Parking was adjacent to the hotel and included in our room rate. The town was easy to navigate by tour bus hop on hop off, and fun to walk as much of the town is pedestrianised. Lots of photo ops. Great place to visit and stay! Everybody was pleasant!
