A visit to the Cop
by Emmjai
Liverpool Football club has an international reputation, and run tours of the grounds, as well as having a museum and the ubiquitous shop! The tour is entertaining, and the museum interesting even for the soccer ignorant; the scouse humour of the tour guides making is a fun thing to do when you are visiting Liverpool, or as I was, taking guests from out of town.

Go shopping (or just browse around) Quiggins. Just opposite the Bus station, and up the little road that has DoDo on the bottom of it, is Quiggins. Quiggins is a hive of all things funky. It consists of 3 (at last count) floors of pokey little shops full of jewellery, fashion, trinkets, antiques and everything else under the sun. There is also a cool coffee shop. A lot of the stuff is second hand and as such is pretty cheap and good value. Above all this place is individual and hip without being oppressively fashionable.
Another early evening haunt.

If you have read my other tip on McHale's bar, which is close by, you will know that I was somewhat intrigued by the fact that the entertainment in Liverpool starts so early in the evening. When I visited here about half past seven on a midweek night, it was in full swing and apparently had been for some time.
A female singer (pictured) was belting out pop standards to the accompaniment of backing tracks. I have a feeling her stage name was Josie, but I wouldn't swear to it, and she was obviously a big local favourite. I would describe her style as from the Tina Turner / Bonnie Tyler school i.e. 100% and as I musician myself I was certainly impressed with her commitment. I was told that professional acts are interspersed with karaoke, which seems to be extremely popular in the City. Perhaps Scousers just like to sing.
The bar itself has a distinctly Wild West theme, as you can possibly see from the photos and was certainly friendly enough. Despite it's proximity to the University the crowd were, shall we say, not exactly young so your humble VT tipster fitted right in!
I believe there is live music every evening, and it was quite a fun place to go. No apparent dress code that I could see.
GET A RENTAL CAR
by sabsi
If you plan to stay in Liverpool for a few days and continue exploring the area from there you could get a rental car. We got one from Hertz at Liverpool airport. As we booked it through www.holidayautos.co.uk we got quite a good deal for it.
If you plan to only stay in Liverpool, however, you don't need a car. There's an efficient bus system in town and in the city centre you can walk everywhere easily.
When we landed at Liverpool we were a bit shocked. There was snow and ice on the streets! We collected our keys and almost fell over on the way to get the car. Our little Vauxhall Corsa had some nice summer tyres though. Like this I could concentrate on icy roads AND driving on the wrong side of the road at the same time ;)
