Restaurant prices

by fionasydney

I'll be in Liverpool in August and most of the time eating out cheaply, but for a big night out I've heard that Alma De Cuba is really beautiful. What would I pay for dinner for 2 and 2 or 3 bottles of wine? And will it be worth the money?

Some reviews here:

More if you google.

Seems to be beautifully deorated, but rather expensive for drinks/food.

The Alma De Cuba is a bit more expensive than the average in Liverpool, but the food is good and the surroundings are quite exquisite. Be aware that you will need to book a table weeks ( sometimes months ) in advance. Once you have finished eating ( if you dont want to stay in the Alma) the bar scene around the area is very lively.

Travel Tips for Liverpool

Views From Radio City II

by steventilly

This is one of the other great waterfront buildings, and maybe Liverpool's most famous building. It's The Royal Liver Building and was the home of Royal Liver Insurance.

It was built in 1911 and was the largest building in the world at that time to be built of reinforced concrete, though thankfully it was still built to a classical design. The two clock towers each contain clocks of 25 feet in diameter, the largest striking clocks in Britain (the clocks of Big ben are only 23 feet).

On top of each tower is a Liver Bird, the mythical symbol of the city of Liverpool. If they ever 'fly away' then disaster will befall Liverpool. Maybe that's why they're tied down! :-)

FRIENDLY LIVERPUDLIANS

by sabsi

The people of Liverpool seem to be very very friendly (their accent is a bit hard to understand though ;).

We were searching for the Radio City Tower and couldn't find it (yes, it is possible to get lost searching for the highest building of the city ;) so Susan asked two old ladies from Liverpool.

They asked us to just follow them, showed us Eleanor Rigby's statue and almost invited us for tea to show us where George Harrison lived ;-)

Mersey Tunnel.

Drive through the Mersey Tunnel

Crossing the Mersey by tunnel

There is not just one Mersey Tunnel - three tunnels in total pass beneath the River Mersey, linking Liverpool to Birkenhead and the Wirral. The tunnel's road links are open 24 hours per day, 365 days a year.

The railway tunnel is the oldest, opened in 1886. Queensway tunnel, between Birkenhead and Liverpool, opened on 18th July 1934. The third and newest, Kingsway tunnel, between Liverpool and Wallasey, was opened on 24 June 1971.

Pay tolls at the booths on entering the tunnel

Breakdown fees are chargeable - extra if you run out of fuel or have a flat tyre

£1.30 to come into liverpool.

Liverpool One

by sandysmith about Bog Name Stroes

The face of Liverpool is fast changing - there are now even more shops as the first phase of Liverpool One is now opened linking the waterside with the centre of the city. Modern new architecture amidst the old is blending quite well.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport

by drgrcook

Liverpool John Lennon Airport is one of the oldest in the country and until moving to its present site the terminal was a 1930s Art Deco building from where wealthy passengers flew BOAC all over the world when Manchester Airport was a field with a sock on a pole.

The two vast hangers (one of which is the oldest in the country) and the old terminal are listed buildings and are now used as a hotel, fitness centre and ofices respectively.

After the second world war the government, keen to encourage regional airports, offered to invest in Liverpool Airport but the money went to the field with a sock as the local MPs and city elders decided that Liverpool was a port and that there was no future in man flying up in the air - it was a hobby for the elite rich - the rest is history.

The New Airport terminal is 6 miles from the city centre which is reached by bus or taxi. Both of these leave from directly outside the building, expect to pay about £15-20 for a taxi. The bus is much cheaper and you get to see some of the sights.

A new train link is being built in South Liverpool, three miles from the airport and a shuttle bus will take passengers to the new facilities.

This new development involves moving Garston Station along the track, nearer to Allerton Station where two local linesare adjacent to one another, linking the two and providing bus and train access.
