Liverpool for the day with kids

by sparkieplug24

Hi this question is actually for my sister and not for me as if i was going to liverpool i know exactly what I would be doing I am big fan of John Lennon but anyway.

Anway she is travelling down to somewhere (no idea where) just outside liverpool on holiday in July and they are planning to travel into liverpool to spend the day and possibly the early part of the evening here. Her question is what are must does while here particularly things that will interest her 6 year old girl?? The group also includes an 18 year old so can anyone recommened any good pubs that also allow kids in during the day??

I cannot recommend any pubs that allow kids in but the best thing in Liverpool for kids of all ages is the ferry across the Mersey. We go on it every time we go to Liverpool and never get bored with it. There are a couple of options for trips across the river but the website has details.

You could use this website to search for pubs close to where they will be.

Maybe a good one could be crossing the river Mersey by ferry ( to the opposite shore of Seacombe-New Brighton where there is a nice seaside walk and some kids stuff in summer. I did time ago and I liked it. Make sure it's in summer...
The pedestrian part of the city center is lively, so I recommend the pub area of Mathew street.

A visit to the Albert Dock may be a good starting point. As well as the usual shops, bars and cafes its home to Merseyside Maritime Museum and the Tate Liverpool. The Beatles Story is also there and if interested in tours you can book on the Yellow Duckmarine tours - which use a World War II landing vehicle to tour the main sights by road and then splashes down in the Salthouse Dock. There's also a pub doing food - The Pumphouse.

Also, I havent been myself but have heard good reports about Underwater Street - a childrens discovery centre in the Cunard Building (just across the road from the Liver Building) Although I'm guessing this wont appeal to the 18 yr old.

When your sister decides where she's staying she should check out the Merseyrail travel site as she may be able to get the train/underground into Liverpool so saving the need to drive and park. James Street station is a couple of minutes walk to the Albert Dock and Pier Head.

The Museum in the centre has recently been renovated and has loads of interseting exhibits, many hands on. There a planetarium on the top floor and an aquarium section.

You can get the ferry that goes to Wallesey, and in the actual terminal at the Wallesey side there is a small sea-life type aquarium.

If its a nice day, once on the Wirral, take a bus to New Brighton, invest in a bit of nylon rope, some cheap bacon and a weight and drop it in the lake. You'll catch loads of crabs.

Just noticed that thsi posting has turned very fishy, but you are on the coast.

As a few people have mentioned, taking a ferry across the mersey is a good family friendly option.
Also, they are several pubs over this side of the water with decent beer gardens for the kids.
If your sister is planning on hiring a car a particularly good one is the Farmers Arms near Royden Park in Irby.

Travel Tips for Liverpool

Merseyside Maritime Museum for Ship Lovers!!!

by aadil

Visit Liverpool's Merseyside Maritime Museum in the Albert Docks and the ships docked there. The entry is free since 2002. Take a look at the famous sea faring ships (models) and also meet the person who takes care of all the models there. He will teach you how to make a ''ship in a bottle'' if you'd like to make one!!! Special hobby classes for those interested in making models and a library and research centre too!!! Interesting exhibitions on the history of seagoing merchant navy ships and the wartime conversions too!!! Nice exhibition on the H.M. Customs as well!!!

Liverpool people

by William1982

You'll find Liverpool people very friendly and more than willing to answer questions and give directions, just ask. Most people like a chat and enjoy talking about the city and Liverpool life, especially if you are a tourist. The best places for this are in pubs/ bars and public transport, and in the street, and anywhere really.

Life here is a lot different than in London, where people avoid looking at each other on public transport and also seem to drink on their own in bars (never seen so many single drinkers). Strange???

We stayed in Hoylake because I could not find a hotel with vacancies in Liverpool within my price range. If you want a trip to the Merseyside coast Hoylake is a good place for a long walk along a promenade with sea views. There are some good restaurants and cafe bars here too and if you want to read more on Hoylake have a look here on VT.
Wirral Line train that is West Kirby bound from Liverpool.

Williamson Square

by sandysmith about Liverpool Club Shop

You don't have to make a trek up to Anfield to get your fooball souvenirs anymore - there's an official club store right in the city centre at Williamson Square Sports kit, videos, mugs, club photos...anything connected with Liverpool FC...great for christmas presents!

I really like these old taxis which are still seen on the streets. Would have loved to take a ride at once. But I think it's quite expensive! This is waiting in front of Anfield, guess the guest just stopped for some more shopping in the great store here!

I want a Didi Hamann shirt!
