Gold stars all around for the Malmaison

Stayed at the Malmaison Liverpool for a 1 nite midweek break on 25/7 as a treat for my partners 30th. Only 15 min taxi ride from John Lennon airport and once you step inside the signature ambience and lushness of the Malmaison is evident everywhere !! Very efficent and friendly check-in staff pointed us to the direction of our room and we were not disappointed. We choose a suprerior double room and the decandance of the room and bath/shower facilities was wonderful.
After heading out for the night and then returning for a wonderfully, peacful night's sleep we headed to breakfast and enjoyed bacon baps which were divine !!
Was impressed by the helpfulness of the staff, everything we requested from taxis to room service was delivered swiftly. Look forward to a return visit !!

I seem to be having a tour of the Malmaison hotel chain and although I - along with my husband -did enjoy the visit to Malmaison, Liverpool, it certainly wasn't the best in the chain.
Obviously this is a unique hotel for Malmaison as it is a new build, but this is what surprised us. Why did they design a new hotel with such small windows which don't open, and therefore, almost no natural light in the rooms??
The bathroom was great , as far as the huge shower and the always impressive toiletries go, but there was very bad lighting and no shaving/make up mirror which was disappointing...
On the plus side, the staff were very helpful and friendly and if we could find out if the top of the building (yet unfinished and apparently still being built) is going to be part of the hotel, we would definitely visit again.
Great Hotel .... not perfect, but still great

I have been staying in the Malmaison liverpool for 4 weeks now while on business. I have to say that it is one of the best hotels i have stayed in. The rooms are are very well furnished if a little dark due to the colour scheme. The bed is comfortable and a very good size in all the rooms i tried. The bathroom/wetroom is well laid out and the shower is very good. The bath is large and fills up very very quickly, be careful not to over flow it.
The brasserie / bar are both very good. If you do go down for dinner, ask for the local produce menu as the 3 course meal for £15.50 is v.v.good value and has some very tasty options. They generally only offer this menu til 8pm but i just book for 7.45 and ask for it.The rest of the main a la carte is good food but more expensive. They have a very good wine selection served by their somelier( wine dude). The wines that were recommended were all very good wines, well served but this can add to your bill significantly. I have only tried breakfast the once, its good but i consider it too expensive.
They have free wifi thorughout the hotel plus a connection in each room. To use the wifi, you have to ask for a free code at reception, you just plug in in the rooms. The internet connection is throttled to 30KB/s per guest though, a little frustrating.
I found all the staff that i dealt with to be very open and friendly. On a couple of occasions, i found the wait for food to be a little long but this was offset by the offer of a free glass of wine. The car park is £15 a night for a completely secure car park or you can park on the land next door for free. not recommended, i prefer peace of mind and leave my car where it can be watched.
I stay in a lot of hotels for extended periods and i have found the service they offered me as a long term guest head and shoulders above any of the other chains i am sometimes forced to use (holiday inn/grim or Marriott(hell)) so if you are going to be staying for a week or two, call the manager, work out a good rate and enjoy feeling valued for once.
Highly recommended.
Nice room, shame about the service

Arrived to be allocated a room on the 2nd floor, supposedly with a River view. First attemp to open the door failed due to the keys not working, so another trip to reception. Got some more keys made up which worked only to open the door to find someone in the room getting changed and ready to leave!!!
Got re-located to the 5th floor, which was a nice room but not much of a River view. Then we got 3 or 4 phone calls to find apologise and to ask our names???!!!??
Breakfast was excellent but at £11.95 for continental and £13.95 for something cooked it was very expensive.
Checking out was another farce due to them not having a record of us changing rooms (despite the 4 or 5 phone calls) They claimed to have an imprint of a credit card for payment which wasnt even ours. 15 minutes later it was sorted to then be told that parking next to the hotel was another £15 on the bill.
So for £165 room rate, another £15 for parking and £28 for breakfast it made it a rather costly one nights stay.
For this money I expect much better service.
Mal - Treatment

After a hard week working in Liverpool, I decided to stay at a "better" hotel and use the opportunity to have an important meeting with a work colleague.
MalMaison looks impressive and on first entrance the place is relaxing with a cool vibe created by piped music.
At reception though, the whole experience began to go downhill.
Normally I have my wife or PA phone through my reservation and card details and leave it at that.
This time I did the reservation but left my credit card in the car and after a little resistance from the male receptionist I was allowed to check in on the proviso that they would be furnished with my card immediately afterwards.Very nice of them !
When I returned with the card, I couldn't remember my PIN, but offered 2 alternatives if I couldn't work out the number. To pay with a bank direct debit card or contact my wife who would phone through her card details. By now I was dealing with a female receptionist whose eyes were spinning at the injustice of having to deal with an imbecile who couldn't remember his card details. I mean where do they get these customers from?
After phoning my wife, who couldn't remember my PIN either, but who offered to pay with her card, I was just about to solve the problem when the receptionist, I didn't get her name, approached , obviously with something on her mind and imperiously spat out "How were you planning to pay if you can't remember your PIN?"
Taken aback at the rudeness and aggression of her behaviour I offered to pay with my Bank Card. After huffily accepting this as payment , plus charging an extra amount to cover any incidentals, I suggested ways in which the receptionist might learn to deal with customers more sensitively..I was greeted with a look that implied she was right and I was wrong and informed that she had been working in hotels for 2 and a 1/2 years (wow) and had never come across such a situation. So there it was, I was either an imbecile or a villain (or both) and clearly not worthy of being allowed to stay in a MalMaison.
Had I not had a business meeting on site later that night I would have checked out immediately. Because this was not an option I decided to calm down, try to forget the worst hotel receptionist ever and make the best of my stay at MalMaison which I was beginning to internalise as meaning "Bad House".
Later that night I met up with my colleague for a pleasant chat and supper. Before our food arrived, there was a fire alarm and everyone in the hotel , was rightly ushered outside.Sometime between 20 and 30 minutes later we were let back in (again a fact we should be thankful for). However the sight of guests compliantly returning to their tables to eat cold food will stay with me forever. When some neighbouring diners suggested the possibility of free wine or new food to counter the delay caused by the fire alarm, their suggestions were brushed off with a smile and a laugh by the staff (oh the impertinence of such a suggestion ! ). Fortunately for us, our food , 2 cold caesar salads had not yet arrived. I won't go into how poor this dish was but the sight of a transparent private dining room titled the "Kitchen" strikes a discordant note betwen expectation of the food and the reality of it.
On the good side, the principals of the business should be congratulated for designing and building such a wonderful property. Everything works well and the rooms are quiet and comfortable. It is just a pity that these same high qualiites do not seem to be passed down to the staff.
I have found that the best operations are judged not by their buildings but by the premium care that their people offer and stand for .
Needless to say I won't be returning. However if you like your grand hotels mixed with poor food and condescending, rude staff who have forgotten that the customer is King, then you might like it very much.
Great for a child-free city break

Just come back from 2 nights here. Booked a superior double (larger room/kingsize double - and they do mean kingsize! - and Mersey view) as a treat for my wife and I without our kids for once. Easy to find although access is one way only and with a pull in for loading/registration. Very friendly staff - asked all the right questions and clearly explained the car parking arrangements and charges.
Stayed on the RH end of the 5th floor with a great view, if at a slightly acute angle, of the river and docks, but a great view of the superb Liver Building. Very good bed and linen, bath (yes it genuinely is a 2-person), shower, toiletries, TV etc. but not very good natural light even with a floor to ceiling window! Brasserie dinner was excellent as was the bar, and the breakfasts both days. Possibly the best 'chain' hotel breakfast I've had in terms of range/quality of buffet and cooked versions, although certainly not cheap!
Easy walk to the city centre, galleries, shops, restaurants etc. Simply Heathcotes is a great place to eat and is virtually just on the other side of the road. The general area is still a major construction site in anticipation of the 2008 City of Culture event but the hotel itself was possibly one of the quietest we've ever stayed in in terms of lack of noise from other rooms/plumbing etc. The car park is also brand new with great security, lighting, lifts and easy access. Again not cheap at £15 per night - but peace of mind in a city that used to have a bad reputation for car theft and it means you can leave the car there after you check out if you want to explore the city on your final day.
The staff were friendly, helpful and professional throughout and the whole place had a kind of cool but not smug confidence about it. I've stayed in other Mals and this one is a much less attractive building, but the fact that it's been designed from scratch probably makes up for that. As a chain Mals will never offer the same real 'care' that a privately owned boutique hotel can, but the product is certainly good and consistent and I've yet to be disappointed.
Everything a hotel should be!

Stayed here for the second time at the weekend and loved it just as much as the first.
You can't fail to be impressed by the interior right from the moment you step through the doors. The colours, the furniture ... everything.
The staff are fantastic - very friendly and helpful. The food is wonderful should you wish to eat in the brasserie, or relax in the bar with a gin and tonic or two ......
Location is great, next door to Albert Dock or about a 15minute walk in to the city.
Nothing negative to say about this hotel, I'm off to stay in the others, namely Oxford, but will definitely be back to Liverpool!
