As far as I'm aware your best bet would be to get the shuttle train service to Piccadilly station in Manchester and then catch the 700 bus which stops outside and goes direct to Liverpool Airport. As for hotels there is a rather posh Marriot hotel housed in the old terminal building. This is about half a mile away and quite expensive. A new Holiday Inn Express is due to open nearby in a few months though which will be cheaper.

Or another way to do it is to get the National Express coach at Manchester Airport Interchange. This'll take you to Liverpool Coach Station on Norton St. Then you can get 500 express bus from there which runs every 20 minutes to Liverpool Airport. I think the frequency is reduced in the wee small hours though.

Travel Tips for Liverpool

The Mersey Ferry

by steventilly

The Mersey Ferry links Liverpool with the neighbouring city of Birkenhead, across the river on the Wirral peninsula. Nowadays you can either simply cross the river or take a 'Mersey Cruise', which travels along the famous waterfront and docks and which has a commentary. The Mersey Ferry is made famous by the Gerry and The Pacemakers song 'Ferry Across The Mersey' and your ears will be assailed by this song when take one of these little trips!

Packing List

by StirCrazy

Take your warm jacket! It can be very cold, with a biting wind coming straight in off the Mersey. Travelling from Chester, less than an hour's train journey away, I quickly learned that it was always a good few degrees colder when you got off the train! So don't forget to wrap up warm!!

Museum of Liverpool Life

by sandysmith

This small museum is often been overlooked for the bigger museums like the Maritime and the Tate but its well worth a look and doesn't take up too much time if its sunny outside. The culture and life of Liverpool is displayed from how they used to live and work, the football fever of the city to cult scouseTV programmes like Brookside.

Located just before the Albert Dock and overlooks the Canning Dock where several boat exhibits are open in the summer.

Cheap boozing!

by me0u8074

Main student haunts are in the bold street area, where there is a total variety of late nights bars and clubs that stay open till 2am every night except Sundays. There are many places to get drunk on a budget - look out for the bars advertising cheap shooters, especially baabar and Dom1s. The 'Beatles pubs' include the Jacaranda, where there's lots of photos on the walls, and also the Blue Angel aka the Raz! In the summer there's a barbeque in Concert Square and plenty of seating outside, with weekends being particularly popular. Most places don't have dress codes although many locals do tend to make quite an effort when they go out, especially at weekends!

I got there by rail from Manchester. Liverpool Lime Street station is downtown and in the heart of the city it seems.
Walk when you're anywhere downtown. There's much to see. U might even see a yellow submarine. No, really. Catch a ferry at Pierside and go somewhere from there.
