The Beatles.
Liverpool is the birthplace of "The Beatles". There's a street along in the town center with many pubs having the atmospheres of the beatles.
There's a museum show casing the story of the Beatles from the 1960s.

Can anyone tell me if I really need to prepurchase my rail tickets from Manchester Airport to Liverpool?
I am flying in from OZ in the afternoon on a Friday and returning on Sunday.
24+ pounds return per person seem like alot (thetrainline.com) is there a cheaper but still easy way to do it?
Thanks!
No public transport in the UK is cheap, sadly. It's not essential to pre-purchase tickets, but the cheapest fares are sometimes only available in advance. Www.nationalrail.co.uk is the main train site, but 'the trainline' will give you correct information.
There is a coach from the airport to Liverpool. Coaches are usually a bit cheaper than trains but do take longer, although this particular coach journey has several different timings. Look at www.nationalexpress.com (use the 'click ...to find a list of all our destinations' link rather than any of the search tabs).
Agree with above. Public transport is relatively expensive in the UK. Tried a couple of the local websites I use and they referred me to either train or National Express.
Unless you can get a cheaper rate by booking in advance, then there is no benefit to doing so.
There are bus services between manchester airport and Liverpool, and in addition to the National Express, I am sure I have seen another bus going past me on the motorway ( the route is part of my daily comute!), but I can't remember its name.
Also, are you really only staying in UK for 3 days, or are you returning on the Sunday to Manchester to stay, because if so, you may only be going to manchester city on the sunday, and for some reason, tickets to and fro airports are always more expensive, so I would get a single on the friday, and then work out sunday's trip later, probably when you have recovered from your flight! (The price you are quoting sounds like an ordinary return, i.e with very little saving over two single tickets)
Oh, I forgot to say, your other alternative, may be cheaper but more hassel is to get into manchester city centre then get a bus or coach to Liverpool, try http://www.traveline.org.uk/index.htm or http://www.arriva.co.uk/
Good luck

Warm clothes. And an umbrella. And a raincoat. And a backup umbrella for when someone steals your first one. Usual stuff. Film and cameras are comparable to at home, so don't worry if you need to buy stuff there. Be careful with expensive camera equipment, though. First, keep an eye on it. Second, try to keep it dry.
While visiting West Kirby take a stroll over the sand to Hilbre Island. It is a wild bird sanctuary and it's really lovely. From the old lifeboat station over there you can see the colony of grey seals that live on the sand banks at Hilbre.
Hilbre Island is cut off from the mainland by the tide for up to six hours out of every twelve. When planning a visit you must allow yourself enough time so that you can leave Hilbre at least three hours before high water. Check the notice board and it will tell you what time you should set off from the Island to be back in plenty of time.
This is probably the most spectacular pub in Liverpool. I haven't seen any others unfortunately but it really can't get any better than this!
The interieur design is fantastic: great ceilings, decorated walls, little rooms with a fireplace, mosaic floors etc etc.
The men's toilets were voted England's best toilets. Make sure to check them out. Yes, ladies, you as well! Ask the barman and check whether there's nobody in there and you can have a look as well!
Liverpool John Lennon Airport is located a few miles out of the centre directly at river Mersey. It's rather small but very convenient and there's enough shops here to get rid of your last pounds when leaving.
You can get to and from the airport by express bus #500 or by normal bus #82. Both run frequently, the normal bus is a bit cheaper than the express one. The trip takes approx. half an hour into town.
What I liked most about the airport was the fact that it's named after John Lennon (I guess there aren't too many airports in the world that are named after rockstars?). The slogan is "Above us only sky" ... I think it's a fantastic idea to chose a line from Lennon's song "Imagine" as their perfect slogan.
On the first floor there also is a nice statue of John Lennon.
