Travel Tips for Southport
To the North of Southport is the ancient village of Churchtown - its mentioned in the Doomsday Book! This is a delightful village to visit with its thatched cottages, ancient church and antique shops. Plus the Botanic Gardens and country pubs here. Makes a really worthwhile detour from the hustle and bustle of the shops and pier of the main town of Southport.
Easily reached by regular buses from Lord Street - takes about 10 minutes to get here - bit too far to walk though.
At the end of Southport's long Pier is the Pavillion with its cafe, toilets and penny arcade machines. Now these ones are much better then the modern arcade games as they are the lovely old machines - which take the old penny (there are change machines) inside so if you have old pennies at home bring them as they are then worth 10 new pennies! They are originals from many other areas like Brighton pier. There are what the butler didn't see film shows as well as pin ball machines and penny pushers - lovely old fun and very kitsch.
