More about The Balmoral Hotel

Balmoral - A great place to stay

by A TripAdvisor Member

We have just returned from a two night stay (4 & 5 March 2005) at the Balmoral Hotel and can't wait to return. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Our room had a very comfortable four poster bed. Everything was spotlessly clean. The Yorkshire breakfast was enormous and very good. We ate in the Villu Tout restaurant which is attached to the hotel and this again was excellent - can see why it has won awards. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Good but not as good as it used to be

by TripAdvisor Member faithpig

I stayed here a few times in the mid-90s and it was fantastic. When we were planning a trip to Leeds I suggested coming back here because I had such good memories. Maybe it's not a good idea to revisit things, but it wasn't nearly as good as I remembered. I used to stay in the Lemon Room, which once had a single four-poster bed and lots of little individual touches - not just a chocolate on your turned-down bed, but a little teddy too. None of that this time. We were in the lemon room again - all three of us - when it had been a single. The hotel was ok, nothing to complain about but it had been lovely and luxurious and really special and now it's just average. The food was a different story - we had a really fantastic and memorable meal. Very tasty, excellent service and we really looked forward to the meal on the second night and weren't let down. For the money, I'd say it's a bit expensive and I wouldn't stay there again. Dinner is well worth it though.

Truly an oasis.....

by A TripAdvisor Member

The brochure said an oasis and it was.........friendly from the moment you stepped into the building ,our cases were carried by Ann the lovely receptionist who looked after us throughout our stay.
Our roomwas lovely ,very traditional unlike the restaurant which was modern but calming and the food.... was delicious
This hotel ,although grand, is down to earth friendly & helpful.
We will be back!!!

Well What Can I Say!??!?

This place is truly magical. It offers the best balance in fantastic modern restaurane to finely tuned British hotel quality quirky character. If you went for only one reason go because of the staff. Many thanks ro Ron, Helen, Ann, Mario, Ben (the chef) and Whiskey the Jack Russell, you really made me feel at home during my time with them.

I stayed 15 nights (not all consecutive) 3 seperate trips in all, each time my stay was perfect. Breakfast is amazing, the food in the evening in Villu Toots Restaurant was sublime with faultless service. I always wanted to eat my meal slowly to appreciate it and this was never a problem. If you don't want to eat in restaurant (heaven forbid), then the Hotel is ideally placed to eat in the many restaurants in Harrogate. If you want to keep fit then go to the Academy Gym use a taxi by the way (the gym is free to guests, make sure to get your pass from the hotel reception).

I would not hesitate to go back again and recommend it to anyone who ever asked me. Top establishment. The hotel is ideally placed to enjoy Harrogate, take my advice stay there! Book early as this place is popular for people attending conferences in Harrogate and is always busy, book early to avoid disappointment. Loved the place.

Welcoming and relaxing

by TripAdvisor Member Casey001

Stayed at the hotel for one night with a group of friends. Hotel is a few minutes walk from the centre of Harrogate - in a quiet area and there is parking on site.

We arrived early but were delighted to find our rooms were available and we could check in. All the hotel staff were very friendly and service was excellent throughout our stay.

Our rooms were quite spacious, clean and well equpped and by and large the hotel decor was fine, though the carpet in the main reception area was a bit worn in places. However we were told that a refurbishment programme is due to start very soon (March).

We ate at the hotel's restaurant on the evening - Villu Toots - and had a lovely meal which was fairly priced, and again service was great. Would recommend.

Jaded and disappointing

by TripAdvisor Member MinicoopersLiverpool

We went to the hotel for a pre-Christmas break, having stayed on several occasions over recent years. We were hugely disappointed and felt the hotel had become very tired.
The decor in the room was faded and the paintwork had seen better days. The tiles in the bathroom were mouldy and you could not close the door properly, it looked as though it had expanded with old age.
The chairs looked grubby and in need of a good scrub.
I had recommended this hotel to many friends; there had been so many unusual features and a quaintness about the place. One group of colleagues had booked the hotel for a weekend break this summer. However, on my return, I told them how the hotel had not met its usual mark and they cancelled.
A great shame.

A Very Welcoming Hotel!!

by TripAdvisor Member cmartinYorkshire

I stayed here for a romantic trip away with my Boyfriend. When we entered the beautiful room there was flowers and champagne, we were so delighted and felt at home! The Hotel is set in a beautiful part of Harrogate and only a few minutes from the centre of town! The staff were so helpful when we stayed giving us ideas of were to go in Harrogate and if we had any problems were very prompt to help us!
As i understand the Hotel is under refurbishment and hopefully the turnout will be as excellent as when i stayed there!
Many Thanks to all the staff!

Full of character

What a great place! As soon as you arrive, you greated at the door by a member of staff with a lovely smile on their face. Check in is also a pleasure, we were shown direct to our room which was just up the stairs from reception. The room was lovely, even though it is one that hadn't yet been renovated recently (the hotel is being done up, but we were not disturbed one bit). The bathroom was, by hotel standards, really big, with a lovely corner bath. Best bit was the porcelain cat that was sleeping on the chair near the window - he's your do not disturb - you put him out at night if you don't wish to be woken. Thought it was a lovely touch and really unusual.
It's in a really good location aswell, about a 5 minute walk to the centre of Harrogate. There's a lovely pub just down the road called "Christies", it's really welcoming and has a great atmosphere at night.
We didn't eat in the restaurant, which is a bit of a shame really because when we ordered room service on the last night it was delicious, so I'm sure the restaurant would be even better.
All in all, a lovely hotel with great staff. If we're ever in Harrogate again, we'll definately be going for this hotel. The only downside really is that there isn't much parking, but the hotel do try their best to advise on the best places to park if their own car park is full.

Nice hotel but careful when giving over credit card!!

by TripAdvisor Member jonTLiverpool

Nice hotel with a good atmosphere. On arrival staff were very helpful however not so helpful on departure! I stayed in a twin room with a friend as we recently visited a conference for a few days. Before i had time to make my way to reception to check out the money was taken off my credit card! I think in future it would be more curtious if residents were informed before money was taken from their cards to facilitate an enjoyable stay and install confidence for potential future visits!
