Friendly Staff, Small Rooms
by TripAdvisor Member Craig_Walsh
We stopped in Harrogate on our journey north. We picked Harrogate because it's the home of Betty's, and The Yorkshire hotel seems to be the nearest to Betty's front door.
While called a Swallow hotel on this website, the Swallow logo had been scraped from the brass plaques at the front of the hotel, and it's now a "Folio" hotel. We didn't have a reservation, so showed up at the front desk and asked if they could accommodate us.
From the front desk clerk to the bartender, the staff were exceedingly friendly and helpful.
We booked two rooms for the three of us. The double room was quite small and a bit tired, but not awful. The single room was teeny tiny, and a very peculiar shape. It was almost as though a hotel guru found a way to add another room in a corner of the hallway, or in what had been a closet.
We had a bar meal in the hotel that was surprisingly good.
The hotel could benefit from a bit of refurbishment, and the teeny rooms should be converted back to closets. But otherwise not a bad place to stay.
Betty's, by the way, was fantastic.
Avoid if possible

My partner booked this for our first weekend away together. I read reviews of the hotel so I didnt expect much. If you go with this attitude then you should be ok. The room was tiny and really run down. The bed was dreadful. The place looked like ti needed a good refurbishment and a good clean.
It's ok if you are staying for one night and don;t expect a lot for your money.
Awful, awful, awful!

Perhaps the worst hotel room I have ever had the misfortune to stay in!
The hotel made an initial good impressions from the public areas on the ground floor, but when the lift door opened on the third floor it was like stepping out into a different hotel. Bad points included:
* stained and smelly hall carpets
* nasty stale ciggie smell in the [now at least] non-smoking room
* lumpy and creaky bed - the most uncomfortable I've ever slept in
* TV made a high pitched whine
* dodgy key operation for the lighting took many attempts to get it working
* nasty, tiny bathroom - the loo roll holder fell off the wall when I touched it; the only hotel I've ever stayed in where there was no shampoo provided (although apparently it was in some other rooms); warm, rather than hot, water from the shower.
Not all the rooms are this bad, it depends what floor you stay on. But for a 'special rate' of £85 pn for a standard single, this was very poor value indeed.
Good points: the location is great; there are free newspapers in reception... er, that's about it.
Elegant victorian hotel

Excellent receptionist. All the staff were pleasant and efficient. Food was extremely good but the breakfast was a little cool because of being under buffet lamps. Extremely clean throughout the hotel.Parking was wonderful as the bays are right in front of the hotel. We will certainly be going to the Yorkshire again as we were very impressed with the hotel and with Harrogate.
For old world charm you couldn't find a better hotel
