Jonas Centre Certificated Location: A Real Retreat......

We had pre-booked this site, knowing the ground would be fairly wet. Simon, the centre's manger, advised us to pitch on the hard bit, just room for one van. We were the only people here and had this beautiful site to ourselves. It is pretty secluded and sheltered.
As it rained solidly for four days, we were very glad not to be on soft ground with the possibility of getting bogged in because when it rains in Wensleydale, it doesn't stop!!!
This site was part of a Christian retreat for deprived families or those just seeking a bit of God in a rural setting.They stayed in log cabins, away from the camping area. Facilities that we were able to use included a table tennis and football shed, a playground, an assault course and a football pitch.
There are chickens, goats and horses amongst other animals.
Behind the CL the Wensleydale railway runs, from Redmire to Leeming Bar.
All people we dealt with were extremely helpful and we will definitely return in better weather.

The quietness, the situation and the helpfulness of the manager.
The most memorable part of the site is the road down to reception. In the pouring rain, we failed to notice a sign warning us of a very steep gradient and hairpin bend. We drove the van down this and reckon it's the steepest gradient we have ever experienced. Simon, the manager, was amazed when our motorhome arrived!! Ideally, park in the site and walk down. In the wet conditions, vehicles were slipping on wet leaves covering the road and not making it up the hill.

Cost; £5 a night per unit.

Hurries Farm Certificated Location: Actually A Rhea Farm.....

We were fortunate enough to get on to this small Caravan Club Certificated Location at the last minute. As it was the October Half Term and the weather was good, we were extremely lucky.

Set amongst hills and fields in Malhamdale, it's a rural retreat. No traffic sound, only the call of the Rhea!! I was amazed to find this farm bred Rheas for their meat and also for breeding. Rhea eggs (for hatching) were for sale, as well as the actual birds. Rhea steaks, burgers and diced meat were available to purchase.

It's a three quarters of an acre site, all new hard standings and electric hook ups. Ideal for the wet, cold winter months as this site is open all year. There's also a toilet.

The morning we were due to leave, we were delayed as we had to wait for Green Flag breakdown service to get us started. The owners were really friendly and told us there was no hurry, even though they had someone coming in for our pitch. The farmer was a real character, telling us there'd been a fair few breakdown callouts from the site!

Very handy for exploring the Malham area, with Malham village a few minutes drive away.

Price: £8 a night for all of us, including electric.

Peace and tranquility. The friendly owners and it's location.

Pottergate B&B: Best ever accommodation

I have stayed in classy hotels all over Europe and in several British bed and breakfasts but I can honestly say that this place is out of the ordinary! Nowhere else have I left and actually missed the owners :))) It feels like Lindsey and Gary are long time friends and they will do anything to make your stay as nice as possible. On top of that, they must have worked for months getting the lovely, listed, Pottergate House not only in order but also gorgeously decorated in a romantic but classy style where everything matches. All rooms are en suite and spacious with TVs, warm showers and comfy beds. Breakfasts are early but that suits most people as they are here to walk or visit the Dales. Gary dons his whites and a full Yorkshire breakfast or a continental one is then served, the choice is yours. Whatever you want there will be plenty of it, including seasonal fruit for the continental choice. The place gets booked up early since it isn't big and they have lots of guests walking the Coast to Coast so make sure you book in advance. Location is hard to beat for the price and service you get - it is less than five minutes' walk from the Market Place. As Lindsey and Gary have a motorbike themselves, bikers and cyclists are more than welcome, and they can tell you lots about local places to visit for the day. Our seven-year-old was nearly crying all the way back to Sweden because she had felt so at home here and was missing not only the people but also the cat.

The decorating is fantastic when you're used to weird "plastic" patterned wall-paper and brown carpets in English B&Bs...Breakfasts are huge...Lindsey and Gary are people who were born to run this establishment.

Lady Anne Middleton's Hotel: A quiet hotel in York

This hotel is within walking distance of York city centre, but is situated in an attractive garden setting. The main building, Skeldersdale House, dates from the 17th century and has a quaint charm.

Breakfast was good - I can recommend the kippers.

Parking space can be a bit limited.

'Quiet' rooms are available. These have something of the air of a converted old people's home. If you are looking for a lively time, this hotel may not be for you.

York International Youth Hostel: Good prices

We have stayed at YHA York several times as it is well priced for York and they provide private rooms (with TV and coffee making facilities) as well as the usual dorms.

It is a delightful and easy walk to the centre of York along the river from the YHA which is an added attraction - parking in the city is a nightmare! After checking out it is only a short drive to the nearest Park and Ride if you want to spend the rest of the day in the city. Parking at the hostel itself is a bit limited so get there early to get a space!

The meals are an added bonus - a satisfying breakfast is included in the price and evening meals are available too. These are very filling - just right for people who have been active all day, not so good for those who have been indulging in cream teas in the city!! There is a bar in the hostel, and the usual facilities for self-catering, washing machines, internet access etc.

The YHA in York is within easy walking distance of the city centre and is easily the most affordable accommodation in the city.

Carr House Farm, Ampleforth: Great B&B

Great B&B accommodation in the southern North York Moors with a very friendly welcome from Anna and superb breakfasts - local produce and homemade preserves etc. Our room was a delight, a four-poster bed and a wonderful view of the Moors. Carr House is just outside the village of Ampleforth where you will find great pubs for evening meals and is within easy reach of all the attractions of the North York Moors - which are many. We recommend this B&B to you all and will certainly be returning ourselves (as do many of Anna's guests).

Friendly welcome. Ancient farm house, low beams, great rooms. Quiet, countryside location, great views. Superb breakfasts.

Travel Lodge, Scotch Corner, Skeeby: Good Value

We stayed at Skkeby travelodge, part of a Uk chain.
The rooms are no frills, but comfortable with ensuite, TV, tea and cofee making.
Beds nice and clean, and rooms sleep up to 2 adults and 2 children (on seperate sofs bed)

Situated near main road, but still quiet.
Nice and central for attractions.

Offocial room rate £55, but you can get it much cheaper by booking in advance on Travel Lodge website.
target price £26 - £35 per room per night

Ox pasture hall, Scarborough: a beautiful country house hotel

I booked this hotel off the internet expecting it to be of a good standard as it was a 3 star hotel.
When I arrived I got a very pleasant suprise, this hotels website does not do it justice, it is a very beautiful building, decorated in a vey attractive manner, with elegant manicured gardens, set in the heart of the countryside, but yet only 5 mins from scarborough.
The service is pleasant and efficient, the food is excellent (with huge portions) and the atmosphere is very relaxing. If you are looking for somewhere a cut above the rest in the scarborough area -this is it. I would not hesitate to reccomend it to anyone. I will definately be paying a repeat visit.
Go and see for yourself, I promise thst you will not be dissapointed.

One of the most lovely features of this hotel is that most of the rooms are laid out around a central lawned courtyard with a pond and attractive flowers and shrubs, some of the better rooms have this lovely view at the front door and a view of the large pond and open countryside through the room window.There are elegant benches just outside your front door so that yoo can sit outside and enjoy the view and the sound of the birds singing.
Another great benefit is the location of the hotel, right in open countryside (complete with cows and bulls grazing next door). with the scenic raincliffe woods opposite, yet you are within 5 mins drive of scarborough, 20 mins from whitby, 10 mins to the magnificent dalby forest with its miles of walking and cycling trails, 30 mins from pickering and the north yorks steam railway, basically it is ideally situated to explore the north york moors and area.
Best of all they accept dogs!

KELDY COTTAGES: A HIDEAWAY IN THE FOREST

SELF CATERING LOG CABINS IN THE MIDDLE OF ACRES OF FOREST-8 MILES FROM THE NEAREST VILLAGE.
If your idea of a good holiday is to get away from the rat-race, somewhere quiet (so quiet the silence hurts your ears when you first arrive),where you can go for long (18 miles ) or short (2 miles) marked walks through the countryside, where you are less than 30 minutes drive from the coast, and whichever direction you set off to you will pass marvelous scenery and quaint villages and you are only i5 minutes max from the A64 (four hours total door-to door from london) THIS IS IT!

Watching the pheasants, weasels, grouse and various other wildlife from your living room. The immense variety of marked walks of varying degrees of difficulty straight from your front door (maps and info available free from the site managers office). AND BEST OF ALL-YOU CAN TAKE YOUR DOG (this is doggy paradise, you can walk them till their paws drop off).
**STOP PRESS** forest holidays are currently renovating/modernising all their sites keldy is being worked on at the moment and is due to re-open in june 2003 with their wonderful new swdish log cabins (beautiful spacious and with all mod cons) To see the new style cabin have a look at my cornwall page which has photos of the accomadation at forest holidays deerpark site - the cabins are exactly the same as the ones currently being installed at keldy.

I stayed at this caravan park with my aunt and uncle in their caravan. It's fine as far as caravan parks go. Close to Knaresborough. I remember the lovely warm showers that are available.
