 Right on Ripon's market square, a couple of minutes' walk from the Cathedral.....you couldn't really be more central.

It's a fairly big place, an old coaching inn (Georgian) gradually being refurbished.

My room was on the second floor (no lift) , and had not been refurbished. But it was comfortable enough, with double bed, dressing table, tea and coffee making euipment, telly and so forth. The old fireplace was still there, and there was a view over the rooftops to the cathedral (looking sideways).

The bathroom had a bath as well as shower, which was good, and the water was very hot indeed. The shower was not very efficient, but that is to be expected in the UK: we are not very good at water pressure in showers.

Rooms at the back are very quiet indeed. rooms at the front may have some traffic noise, especially on market days.

Breakfast was standard for UK hotels: cereals, juice, tea or coffee, fried breakfast (freshly cooked, which is important), toast and preserves.

Staff were courteous.

There is a guests' lounge on the first floor overlooking the square, with window seats, a very modern television and a selection of books.

Parking is at the rear of the hotel,and quite difficult to find...best to explore on foot first. Spaces are limited.

The hotel bar offers food,and there is a restaurant, but Idid not eat there. I found a much nicer place round the corner (see tip).

I thought this hotel was a bit pricey for a 2*, to be honest.
