Do Not Go Poor Standard What a Waste
by TripAdvisor Member horiato
What a terrible place. The hotel room was expensive £90. per night double room, i expected the Ritz, was i sadley disappionted.
the room was small, smelly and the ceiling had damp patches on it. The sheets smelt as though they had not been changed and they still use blankets! yes that's right!!!
I think the last time it was decorated was when it was built and the whole hotel was dirty.
The food was standard, nothing to write home about and we feel totaly disappionted that we wasted all our hard earned cash by booking in for the night at this hotel. This was definatley a ' Money wasted ' experience.
I would not recommend this hotel especially for the cost, cleanliness, or food and if i were a hoteleir in the area i would be concerned that this hotel is letting down other accomodation in the area. I would never visit this hotel again and i would not recommend to anyone not even on a It's ok basis.
My dog lives in quaters with better conditions.

Waste of money
by TripAdvisor Member keefdave
We stayed in The Clifton Hotel over the august bank holiday weekend. We only chose this hotel because of the car park but when we arrived, said carpark was full. We aquired a parking pass from reception which allowed on road parking for 4 days. We were charged for the pass even though we paid £220 for 2 nights. The room was shabby, damp patches on the ceiling, the tv needed tuning in everytime it was switched on. The bathroom light did not work nor did the bedside lights. The sea view that we paid extra for was obscured by the filthy windows. Breakfast was disappointing. Overall a complete waste of money.
Adequate but lovely views
by TripAdvisor Member nessief
After reading previous reviews we were slightly apprehensive about our visit as part of a large group.
We were given a very warm welcome and must say that all members of staff encountered during the 6 night stay were polite, friendly and efficient so top marks there.
Our room was spacious with fantastic (side) sea views. It was furnished nicely and was serviced well. Generally it was clean but I wish that time could be given for extra cleaning eg: the fabric pelmet desperately needed vacuming as did the blind in the bathroom. The bathroom had been updated but is now a little tired and I don't think had been adequately "finished" during updating. The corridors etc are a little tired but overall adequate and the main communal rooms comfortable and nicely and sympatheticaly decorated for the age of the hotel. The lift was very old and caused problems for older guests in our group when previous users didn't shut the metal grid on leaving the lift.
The food was edible and nicely cooked but sadly lacked imagination. Breakfast was the best meal but dinner choices over the 6 nights were repetetive and about the standard of of a second rate corner cafe'. The coffee was great however and all the waiting staff very pleasant and obliging.
I would stay again as part of a group as the price was good but not as an individual, as I have had much better for less money.
very pleasant

just returned from a short stay at the clifton hotel and we stayed in a family room which overlooked the sea and the castle and even had a view of the cliffs to the north. The room was very clean and spacious with an adjoining room for our daughter with en-suite. Very clean bathroom which had just been refurbished so was very sparkly clean. Staff very friendly, with a warm welcome upon arrival, bar/lounge nicely furnished with good prices at the bar, dining room provided excellent choice and value, food was wonderful.
Cant understand the bad reviews, i would have no hesitation recommending this hotel to all my family and friends.
Believe me when i say we are fussy travellers and i like to stay in comfort! We have already booked again for next year.
Smelly & Dirty

Stayed here in August on what was supposed to be a celebration weekend. The hotel is seriously grotty, so bad we only stayed one night and wouldn't have done that if we hadn't left it so late in the day before viewing our room. The place stunk of mildew and mould and the fluff and dust in the room must have been around for years. There was old mug rings on the bedside table and would you believe it, they still use blankets - the one and only on our bed was disgusting with someone elses hairs on it plus it was all rough and bobbly. The bathroom was a sight to behold, as soon as we opened the door it made us gag and the filth at the back of the toilet seat and around the taps was absolutely disgusting. Whoever was responsible for housekeeping should have been sacked. When we complained the Manager and Housekeeper checked our room but couldn't find anything wrong - they were obviously very loyal employees.
After compalining in writing and sending copies of our photo's we have since received 2 refunds. If this hotel had nothing to hide we would not have received anything. The reason I have only just posted this comment is because we were pursuing our complaint. The last person to put on a comment must have very low standards as it was rated a 5. The whole place needs a total refurbushment.. We were told our bathroom was new - we didn't even use it, it was so bad. We travelled to York to a Holiday Inn which was spotless and the first thing we did on arrival was take a shower. If you value your health - don't stay here as we both had chest infections for the following 2 weeks where we had breathed in the mould and dust.
Good value for money paid, got complementry upgraded room.
by TripAdvisor Member boxer45
Good value for money overall. Got a complementry upgraded room when called the hotel as incentive to book.
The room was very large including the bathroom. It had just been redecorated (could smell new paint & clean wallpaper). The bed was a super King Size and very comfortable, however I would have been disappointed if I had paid for the upgrade as there was a yellow tatty & dirty sofa in the room and the shower over the bath flooded the bathroom everytime it was used. The bath, sink & toilet fittings had seen better days.
The room was clean, however the attention to detail on the refurbished room was not quite right.
The food on DBB was slightly above average however more choice on the breakfast would have been appreciated. Mushrooms, hash browns, yoghurts, fruit.
Overall a very pleasant stay, I would go back and would recommend as long as person recommending to do not want luxury.
Awful!

We have just returned from a weekend at the Clifton Hotel - 2 adults and 2 children - and will never return there again. The family room we booked was tiny with bunk beds - our children are 3 and 5 so this was highly unsuitable, plus the window next to the bunk beds did not shut properly and so could be opened quite easily. Great view of the back streets! The paint was peeling everywhere and all the window sills were dirty. The shower was just a tepid dribble. The food was dreadful - 3 thin slices of watermelon for a starter, overcooked salmon, tiny portions. Had to wait a long time for service at the bar which was poorly stocked. Has an archaic lift which I am surprised passed health and safety inspections. Breakfast was no better - we had to eventually ask for service after sitting at the table for 20 minutes being ignored. This is a shabby hotel that is past its prime and needs to update all areas and improve customer service levels. After paying £90 for the night I feel as though we have been robbed!
Was Ok

Me and my boyfriend stopped here for the weekend and quite enjoyed it. The room was quite small but we coped. It was clean and the staff was friendly so not complaints there but i wouldnt say its the best hotel. I dont think we would stop here again unless we had a sea view room. It could do with modernising but other than that was and average hotel.
