More about The Helaina

Simply The Best!!!

by TripAdvisor Member Nicci-W

I would like to reccomend this hotel to everyone. It was exceptional in both cleanliness and hospitality! The rooms were decorated and furnished to a high modern standard with all home comforts. The couple who owned and ran the hotel were friendly and welcoming. We liked their personal reviews on local eateries and bars. This made our stay extra special as we knew where all the best places to eat were. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and look forward to visiting again in the near future.

Wow

by TripAdvisor Member kateandadz

Gorgeous!Just come back from an utterly wonderful stay at this hotel. Beautiful rooms with fresh and tasteful decor - artistic touches here and there, a great breakfast using good quality products and a really sweet welcome. This hotel is the best I have ever stayed in in Scarborough, simply because no detail had been overlooked. The views are beautiful, it is incredibly convinient to get into town and either beach and the general feel of this little area seems to be more hopeful with the owners of this place really leading the way. Our only dissapointment is that the hotel is now closed until Easter. We'll be back for sure next year and Jill says she is thinking about opening year round in the season starting 07. A huge thankyou from a normally critical guest .

Better than ever

by TripAdvisor Member revtel

We have stayed at the Helaina many times over the years and have always been very happy, The new owners, Tom and Jill, have brought in a number of improvements, and our recent stay was the best yet. Lovely breakfast, spotless rooms, friendly welcome and highly recommended. Only downside is the parking, which can be difficult at certain times of the day, even with the permit. But don't let that put you of this little gem of a hotel!

Cream eggs on arrival,yummy!

by TripAdvisor Member eca03meh

This hotel made our trip to Scarborough. Tom and Gill are excellent hosts and their attention to detail pays off. We arrived in our room to find cream eggs, a wonderful welcome for the easter weekend.

Although our room was on the small side, there was plenty of space, and the room was furnished to a high standard.

Breakfast was delicious and made a great start to a days exploring Scarborough.

Gill is very helpful, and can recommend numerous restaurants aound the area to try, and places to visit, be sure to ask/chat to her at breakfast.

If you're thinking of staying in Scarborough, this Hotel is the place to stay!

nice B&B

by TripAdvisor Member GrahamF

Very nicely presented B&B. Clean, bright and stylish with excellent location overlooking North Bay. The quieter half, Scarborough seems to be two resorts, the South Bay being where the arcades and fish'n'chips are. This is a tall terraced building with quite a small footprint so if you have a problem with stairs let them know when booking. Rooms also are quite tight with ensuite facilities squeezed in.

Even with limitations above, I have no hesitation in recommending Helaina. The hosts are a charming young couple who have made absolutely the most of what is available to them, and breakfast was excellent.

Lovely Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member Nic_and_Lee

We stayed in the Deluxe Room for two nights. The room was beautiful, very clean and comfortable with a great sea view. The full English Breakfast was superb, far too much food!

The owners were very friendly and overall standard of the accommodation is excellent. I would highly recommend a stay here.

Coming to Scarborough? Book to stay here...just do it

Excellent rooms - we were very kindly upgraded to sea view rooms as they happened to be available on the night we were staying.
All clean crisp and fresh in our en suite rooms. Owners lovely. Breakfast marvellous.

BTW - I would have scored the full '5 stars=excellent' were it not for the fact the front of the house was being painted at the time, so some of our party awoke to find a man on a 'mini crane' peering in at them, paint brush in hand! Indeed he had been there the evening before as we watched the sunset too!! The windows had been opened (so someone must have been into room to do so whilst we were out) and the room smelt of paint and was blooking freezing!!
Slightly off putting. That is not the owners fault though really - they have to do the property upkeep sometime right?

All in all - highly recommended and would stay there again in a blink (after first checking no paintwork was being renewed!!)

smashing small hotel

by TripAdvisor Member pattbb

Very good quality small hotel. Parking permits given free to park outside hotel. Only a short walk to main area so can leave the car at the hotel. Quality of breakfast leaves larger hotels in the shade. All good food with a very pleasent service. could not fault. Room was small because we were late booking , but had everthing needed. Spotlessly clean. Lots of tea /coffee and also a supply on reception for you to help yourself. Would highly recommend. The rooms overlooking the sea would be lovely so try and book early.
A little gem

Hotel Helaina is the perfect B&B

by TripAdvisor Member A_and_SToronto

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Helaina for 10 nights in early June 2007, and we could not have wished for a more comfortable stay. All of the reviews that emphasize the cleanliness of the place could not be more accurate, as are those that emphasize how great the owners are.

A taxi from the train station to the hotel was less than 4 pounds. Upon arrival, Tom greeted us in a friendly and relaxed way. Checking in was no problem, and afterwards, Tom spoiled us with tea and biscuits in the lounge (where the chairs and couches are very comfortable). We were upgraded to the best room in the house for the first few days of our trip because it happened to be available, which we really appreciated.

There are small flourishes here that make it a cut above other B&Bs my husband and I have stayed at in North America. For example, the tea and coffee service in each room is very, very nice and thoughtful. A little packet of bikkies was replaced each time we ate them. You can buy a small selection of alcohol from the hosts if you neglect to pick up your own. The wifi service in the lounge is very handy if you have your own computer. And I loved that the doors to the rooms were engineered in such a way that they closed slowly, preventing the doors from being slammed shut.

There are a few things North American visitors, who are used to different conventions, should be aware of. As others have observed, the rooms are quite small--but they are so beautifully appointed and so clean that it hardly matters. The showers don't give a massive burst of water (does any shower in England?), so you need to relax and take your shower at a different pace than you might be used to. The television system in England also runs completely differently than in North America, so you'll only get 5 channels on TV--but again, it hardly matters since there's so much outside for visitors to look at! And of course, remember that if you're staying on the first floor, that means you're on the floor above the ground floor (i.e. the second floor, in North American terms).

The testaments on Tripadvisor to the quality and quantity of food available at breakfast are all spot-on. You will not go hungry at the Hotel Helaina! It's excellent value for money. The women who help out with breakfast are really polite, too. And unlike other B&Bs where I've stayed, the breakfast room is its own room (as opposed to being in the kitchen of the B&B hosts, which I'm not a fan of).

Tom and Jill are a young, worldly couple who pride themselves on being courteous and helpful hosts. They are warm, but they absolutely grasp the concept of privacy. At no time in our 10 days did we feel like we couldn't approach them for help, and yet we never felt as though they were too much in our business. Conversely, Tom and Jill have their own separate flat, so at no time do you feel as though you are intruding in someone's home. In this respect, this place is very much like a hotel.

The location is superb--the North Sea is directly out the front door! It's a 5-10 minute walk to town, and lots of amenities nearby.

Notably, this B&B was nice and quiet (with the exception of our last night, where some drunken revelry was going on in the room above ours). The guests were mostly couples, typically on the older side, who just seemed to want to have a nice, quiet little holiday. If you're looking for a wild party, this is not the place to stay. If you want someplace quiet, cozy and secure, then stay here!

Stay here!

After reading the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor, we choose Hotel Helania, and were so glad we did! We were met by Tom who made us coffee and biscuits and let us relax in the lounge whilst he took our cases up to our room. I was sure I had read that there were teas and coffee facilities in the rooms, but thought I must have been mistaken when he gave us drinks in the lovely lounge. But when we went up to our beautiful room, tea and coffee, biscuits etc. were set out on a lovely tray for us to help ourselves to . The Hotel is only 5minutes walk from the main shopping centre and various restaurants for the evenings. We ate at "Ask" on our 1st evening, situated near the harbour on the sea front. A Pizza and Pasta place. Highly recommended.
It was my husbands 50th birthday whilst we were at the Hotel, and I had ordered champagne for him. This was left in an ice bucket for us on our return late afternoon, which I had asked Tom to do for me. It was a lovely surprise for my husband.
The rooms are quite small, but immaculate, and spotlessly clean. I am extremely fussy and it met my standards! We had a wonderful sea view of the North Bay.The decor is all fresh and so tasteful and classy. Lovely comfortable beds and nice bedding and furniture in the room made it so pleasant to stay in.
Jackie helps out with the breakfasts in the morning, she was so friendly and chatty, she served so efficiently and kept the table well stocked with toast and drinks etc. but left you to eat quietly alone and have a nice leisurely breakfast, which I may add was delicious! You will not go hungry. Fresh fruit salads, yoghurts, cereals, fruit juices, toast and Full English of course! The dining room is gorgeous, and lovely classical or light jazz music playing at breakfast time. It's all these little touches that made Hotel Helaina so perfect! Tom, Jill and Jackie........we'll be back!
